is it possible to just buy a 6 point crimp starter and use it without a press? if i could, how would i go about finishing off the crimp, without a press?

i would buy a press but its basically going to only be for a few rounds and mainly crimping.

Find a friend with a press, don't mess around with explosives unless you do it the correct way.

You could buy the small "roll crimping tool" avail. from many sources, used on a drill or better still, a drill press. Check BP or PR for availability.

I don't believe you can, everything I've seen about making shotshells without a press they use a over shot card and not a star crimp.

The Lee shotshell press is rather inexpensive and great for doing exactly what you need.

When Lee made the hand reloading dies, they also made them in the shotgun calibers: 410, 28, 20, 16, 12 and 10 gauge. As an accessory, they had nylon material individual crimp starters. I've found all except for the 28 and 10 gauges myself. If anyone has those, please PM me. As for loading shotshells without dies, that has been done ever since shotshells have been around.... sometimes safely, sometimes not. Good Luck...........

Ballistic products sells a crimp starter. I don't know what you'd do about the final crimp though.
Maybe find a junker MEC cheap and use the dies off it.
IMO loading on a Lee LoadAll is akin to loading without a press.

On second thought, check the MEC website and see if you can buy them as replacement parts.

Never mind. Enough has already been said about the Lee hand set up.

After loading a few shotshells on the Lee Loader you will realise that if a guy was hard-pressed he could load and crimp shotgun shells with no press pretty easy. The Lee setup makes it easy to get the crimp started and sealed again, without the use of a crimp starter.

I have used correct size funnel to start the crimp, then thumb nail pushed in on crimp segments, followed by a flat dowel end to complete the crimp. The shotshell was crimped tight enough that #8 shot could not fall out.

I have reloaded many 100 thousand shotgun shells in the last 55 years. Please remember that most shotgun powders need the crimp and contents to compress the powder load to XX pounds when the crimp is closed. A much different animal than pistol and rifle reloading. And good results can only be had with a repeatable process ie. press.

+1

You need wad pressure and final crimp with modern day powder and wads.

I've actually started loading shells with no press. I use new primed hulls and load either slugs, tri-ball or 00 Buck and roll crimp, over shot card on all but the slugs.
