There don't seem to be many out there and when you add in the fact that I want a plain base it goes down to nothing.

Any good places online to look for used molds other than here or ebay? Veral Smith has a 22 Spitzer listed, I want something more like the old Lyman 225353.

Looks like a "custom" mold is in your future! Several guys will make you what you want BUT at a price!

I dont know what the lyman #225353 is but if its the 60gn RNGC no longer in production I can tell ya for sure it works great as a plain base. That particular design was just a bit too long for 1/16" twist barrels so I had the gas check portion milled off the mold blocks to make a shorter 50gn PB. It now works wonderfuly well in any twist, although I have not tried it in any of the realy fast twist 223's. Perhaps that custom mold will not be as hard to find as you thought. This idea has opened up a new way of thinking for me. I had the same thing done to an RCBS 45/ 525 FNGC. It is now a 480gn PB and again results are totaly gratifying. Just think of all the options and it becomes mind boggling. Also should mention that NEI will cut any of thier designs shorter by any number of bands you request. I have one of thier 32 cal designs in three different weights. The heviest is with GC shank then reduced in length by the shank, then again by one band. This idea completely changes the picture of whats available by way of custom design.

Check this out. I know it's a Lee and it is a gas check but for the price you could ream out the check. I have one but haven't shot it yet.

I use the 58 grain RCBS which is intended for gas check, but it also works great without hte check--shot it both ways and it's a good bullet.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to try that Lee mold to start with.

Hey Carpetman, I see you're still using that picture of Becca Gambel as an avitar. Special interest or just interest? Dale

I recently picked up a used Lyman 49 grain 22 mold, size die and gas checks. It has worked very well in my Hornet contender. It's becoming even more cost effective what with the price of jacketed bullets being what they are. I highly recommend casting 22 cal boolits.
