Were looking for some really thick, (and yes that eliminates the the skinny US GI blankets) European surplus blankets. Were looking for a bulk lot of 10 to 12.
We have 2 trunks full of Hudson Bay blankets but I took one horse camping once and when I brought it back it was gray. The wife is slowing selling off all our HB blankets to Capote makers and such.
TIA,
Duke

You might want to try some ARMY SURPLUS sites or SPORTSMANS WAREHOUSE.

What I meant to say was, make sure the blankets are clean.
Pathogens are hard to see. I guess I was thinking of the blankets the Calvary gave to the Indians. Maybe I wasn't thinking at all.

Duke, I'll have to look to see if I can find what I paid but I went with some Italian wool surplus blankets. Their I little bigger but I don't have a U.S. surplus to compare it to. FB

Major surplus in Gardena has Swiss style 55 percent wool 60 by 80 and weigh 4.39 lbs each. They are 19.95 each plus shipping. Looks like blue, gray, and chestnut available.

A few years ago I bought a couple of Israeli army surplus wool blankets, and I swear one of them took a burst from a machine gun.

Just a note here... The Army, settlers ect never gave the Indians infected blankets to kill them off. How could they, they didn't know what germs were. They gave them used blankets to keep them from freezing.

Now as to blankets for Duke. Before you buy a bunch be sure and order some samples as some of the EU blankets LOOK good but are really reprocessed wool and itch like crazy.

The reprocessed wool blankets don't seem to be nearly as warm. Not extremely durable, either.

Have no idea if this will suit your fancy, but you mentioned camping. I use quilted moving blankets, or you can make your own. Usually on sale for around six bucks. You can buy six, get a guy with a heavy fabric sewing machine, get a trash can full of duck and goose down, a couple california king sheets and make a heck of a double man sleeping bag that will keep you as warm as a bedbug at 50 below. Four on bottom, two on top. Use white fronted or snow goose down or preferably sea duck down between the layers then sew it up. Can't buy that in Cabelas and if you could they would charge you a grand for it.

There is an interesting artical on wool blankets in the Sept/Oct issue of the "Backwoodsman". This is the same issue that has the "letter to the editor" from our own member Jim.
