My names cephas and I'm a brass scrounger. One of my latest finds was a decent load of 9mm's and 40 S&W's. Took a look at them this morning and found these: http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o21/cephas53/P1010217-1.jpg
Can a 9mm be fired in a 40S&W? If so it scares me to think about who would do it twice.
9mm case was opened to just about 40 with pierced primers.

Almost looks like a 45/44 mag. case I made once when I accidentally put a .45 LC decapper die in my press when starting to do a batch of .44 mags. I don`t see as how a 9mm could fire in a 40 being as they are so much smaller in bullet dia. and case dia., besides if it did fire the case would rupture and be heavily damaged by powder pressure expansion. Looks like a guy made a goof reloading like I did, only once, and just dumped the messed up cases.Robert

I've found a few of those myself while scrounging brass at the range. I know I've found 9's that have been fired in a 40, and if memory serves me correctly, 40's that have been fired in a 45. I do remember being amazed that it had to have been nearly a complete clip full off the incorrect cartridges, and was wondering how they managed to even get it in the pistol.

That might be ammunition for the Asperly Aimless!

Not unusual.

I've seen 9mm, 10mm, 40S&W and 38 Super that looked like that. Most often due to somebody not paying attention when loading a magazine. The slide doesn't cycle so the malfunction has to be cleared. You'd think that if they're paying attention they'd catch it on the first occurrence and check the remaining rounds in the mag before they continued.

So much for "headspace on the case mouth"!

Got one of those sitting on my desk in front of me. Came from a batch of Remington ammo that had a couple 9mm mixed in with the 40. I know this to be the case because I was on the range when the second one we ran across malfunctioned and wouldn't fire. As KYCaster said, the shooter didn't notice that it was a 9mm when he loaded the mag and tried to fire it only this time all he got was a light primer strike.

Easy enough to fire a 9mm in a 40 S&W. The case heads are close to the same diameter. .394 for 9mm and .424 for the 40. That is close enough for the 40 extractor to grab the 40 rim and hold it against the firing pin. It is not a recommended practice though. I also doubt you would develop a lot of pressure given the difference in bore size.

Error: I ment to say for the 40 extractor to grab the 9mm rim.

exactly what that is, 9mm fired out of a .40. Seen it happen.

I had a buddy many years ago load 25ACP into one of my german 32 autos.... he bitched about the pistol not cycling until I had a look see and found his brain cramp mixup.I recently had the experiance of brass picking at a local small range where a "bubba" was shooting his SKS with mixed results in reliability. I looked at it for him and noted the steel cases had a huge swell ahead of the case rim and when looked at the chamber the rifle left me agahst at the bad chamber. But he insisted all was AOK and kept plinking on like a tard. The **** balmed the ammo !.

I have found a few 308win that were fired in something, I don't know what. But, they were completely straight. The mouth had just a little bit left of it left. The mouth was almost like the shoulder. It was round.

Fired in a 30-06 chambered rifle . Have seen it more than once in the brass scrap.

I picked up 5 270 Win cases one day at the range. ALL 5 had the body expanded to almost double the shell diameter for about 1/2 the length of the tipped over shell.

Someone was watching over that fool all 5 times.:groner:

If it will fit or can be made to fit, somebody's done it. I've found 8mm fired in an '06, .303 Savage fired in a .303 British, and .223 fired in a 7.62x39. Recently I wasn't watching closely myself and fired a whole magazine full of .380 auto in my CZ82 9mm Makarov. Admittedly those are much closer rounds, but I was still embarrassed when I picked up the bulged brass.

It really is surprising what people can do and not blow something up. The 8mm in a 30-06 surprised me, but with typical downloaded U.S. commercial ammo with soft lead core bullets I can understand getting away with pushing a .323 bullet through a .308 barrel. Try that with some European surplus ammo (especially steel core) and I'm certain the results would be catastrophically different.

An acquaintance explained to me once how he really liked his .45 colt revolver because he could fire .44 mag ammo through it in a pinch. He said he had done it and it worked fine.:veryconfu
