View Full Version : Gas check boolit minus the gas check?

What kind of performance could I expect from a boolit with a gas check base when loading mild loads without the check. I'm considering a Lee C358-158 SWC mold. How does the gas check base effect accuracy if loaded without a gas check?

My experience you can have good accuracy but the lube can be a mess. But I use a soft lube. Hard lube may work fine.
The GC area will fill with lube.

There's a sticky on this in the gas check sub-forum.

You can plink with them but accuracy will suffer noticably.

The only 357 bullet mold i owned for a long time was the Lyman 358156. I used it with GC and W296 for stomping loads and with 3g of fast stuff for target loads.

Is it just me that’s noticed the trend?...

Gas check designs without the gas check…

& Plain Base designs looking for gas checks?.... Contrary or what?.... :veryconfu

Lee molds are cost effective, just buy one of each, 1 plain base and one gas check design. As for my self I would just go with a plain base design. Checks are quite expensive. Better yet get a Tumble Lube design and you can cut out one step in the preperation of the cast boolits.

I still use checks sometimes on 30cal stuff but other than that they all shoot naked.

Shoot naked! Now that's a thought! Probably against range rules, but haven't checked! Would have to be a solo event I think!

I think what most reloader don't take into account is the base of most bullets is the stearing wheel. Therefore I'm sure accuracy would suffer. You'd be wiser, to get the mold for the bullets, you want to shoot.

Although every bullet & gun is its own senairo . I have two that ive tried bullets with out Gc installed a 452. 260 gr rfn and a 358 180 gr wfn each bullet has been shot from at least 3 different handguns and or rifles . for me with loads under 1,100 fps accuracy has been excellent like 1 1/4" or better at 25 yards ! i tried the same loads with bullets with GC installed and they did not shoot any better.

bopthenailer, there are many different things to the makeup of the bullet. I'm not a bullet designer. Ogive, bearing bands, etc.

about 1 year BC (befor casting) I bought a box of 425 gr lead boolits for my 45-70, when they came i noticed that they were made with a gas check shank. i loaded them not knowing any better and they shot all over the place and once in a while even the target, probably throw them in the pot unless i come across a handful of 45 cal checks.
