I have an old book which indicates some 1885 Highwalls were produced in 50-95 Winchester. I can't find anthing else to verify that. Can anyone direct me to Authoritative Highwall expertise. My practical concern goes to whether larger barrel threads were used for the 50 than were used for the 45 calibers, meaning a thinner chamber wall. I was under the impression Highwalls were made for nothing larger that the 45-70 and up series of cartridges because of thread size considerations. Thanks, BvT

Not a Highwall expert, but there's an 1885 50-90 that's been up for sale on Track of the Wolf's web site for some time. Looks like recent vintage rather than an original. May be custom.

In The Winchester Single-Shot, Volume II, John Campbell lists no fewer than 98 chambering for the Winchester Single-Shot. Many of these were rare and others produced in small quantities. Nonetheless, the Single-Shot, in both high and low wall versions, was chambered in many more cartridges than any other Winchester, and likely more than in any rifle manufactured by any company.

.50 caliber cartridges include:

.50 Eley
.50-70
.50-90 Sharps
.50-95 Express
.50-100 Express
.50-110 Express
.50-125
.50-140 Sharps
.577 Eley

Thanks, I does appear that the highwalls were in .50 caliber. BvT

Last summer, I got to admire a 50/70 Highwall at Ballard Rifle in Cody, WY. Obviously not an original, but still a fine piece of workmanship. If it had been a 50/90, it probably would have followed me home. (www.ballardrifles.com)
I shoot a 14 lb SHILOH SHARPS LONG RANGE EXPRESS in 50/90. There was a thread somewhere that Shiloh will not do some of the light weight models--BUSINESS RIFLE OR CARBINE?--in 50/90 because of barrel thickness concerns, but would chamber in 50/70.
45 caliber is as big as most of the HIGHWALL REPLICA makers will go. Steve Meacham (www.meachamrifles.com) makes HIGHWALLS and would be a good source, as would BALLARD. Their products are beautiful!

Further inquiry on the CPA site indicates that the highwall thread was 15/16-16 t.p.i., and that this did accommodate the 50-70 and longer. I shoot (sometimes) a Pedersoli 50-90 and find it a bit much for me with 600 grain boolits. But I have some thought of a Uberti highwall becomming a 50-70 "business" carbine for the remaining herds of NC deer using the lighter boolits. Yes there are folks out there making rifles that would give you illegal musings(temporarily). But Aldo's boys do a good job for me. BvT
