Just picked up a newer Savage 99DL in .308. Marked Series A with a SN of B4975XX. Anyone able to date this one, or point me at a source? This is too new for the Savage99 site.

Thanks for any help.

As you've found out, there are NO serial number records publically available for both very early, and late Savage & Stevens firearms; and Savage Arms is no longer able to access internal historical information on older Savage, Stevens, or Fox firearms, but the information may be available through John Callahan - who is an independent arms historian and is not an employee of Savage Arms.

Mr. Callahan does not provide parts, gun smith services or offer a locator service for firearms or parts.

Anyone interested should send a detailed letter with:
-Their name and address
-A phone number where they can be contacted if necessary
-The gun's model and/or serial number if available
-Any other pertinent information

Mr. Callahan will respond with a letter detailing his services, if they are available for the stated firearm.

On the front of the lever boss, pivot point, should be a circle with either one or two marks, the letter after this is the year code. Starting with A for 1949, & going to X for 1970. The 99 I picked up recently is L=1960. They do skip O & Q.

Unfortunately this 99 is post '70 and has no letter code on the boss. Now I have 2 without, this one and a '39 .250 (but that one is covered in the Savage 99 website listings). My 50's .300 has the boss code. C'est la Vie!

Pietro - Thanks for the name and address.

I prefer Brunettes, but that isn't a bad choice either! :kidding:

At my age I take what I can get (and my wife will let me have).
