Scored some new casting items the other day from a co-worker who used to make lead fishing weights. Got the lot for $9 plus a big rubbermaid tote to keep a bunch of lead stuff in. I'm just getting started and figured this stuff should work fine. Do have a few questions though.

The small pot and both the spoon and ladle are cast iron, and a bit rusty. Do I need to clean these before casting with them? If so what would be the best way of cleaning them. No idea how old they are but my coworker whos in his late 40's said his dad handed them down to him.

Idea is to use the small pot for casting only, and spoon and ladle for both smelting and casting.

Bored1 don't worry about the rust unless it is real thick then just take a screwdriver and scrape it off the heat fron the lead will burn it off and when you flux your lead it will float to the top any way D Crockett

That fishin weight mold will be good for measuring out Tin or Pewter to add to your lead.

GREAT IDEA!!! I hadn't even thought about that. Its for 1 oz pyramid weights. Those in a coffee can is a better way of storing the 7-8 pewter items I have than whole in a box! Your way they are gonna be ready to use. Gotta LOVE this site, and all the helpful info!!!

I would suggest that you pick up a Lyman or RCBS dipper. The bottom pour feature of those is well worth the investment.

If you access to a bead/sand blaster that will clean them up nicely.
