I inherited a No. 45 Lubricator and Sizer L.G.I. Corp 35 years after my grandfather died. Is this a precurser to the Lyman 450? If so, is it worth bothering with and can I use new sizers and nose punches? Even though I live in a large metropolitan area, we have no retail outlets I can go to to compare the sizing dies I have.

BOYSCOUT, the Lyman is a percectly good sizer. They use the same dies as the 450 or the RCBS for that matter. I have two of them at present and have owned as many five at one time. I have many extra dies if you need to purchase some. Just let me know what size you want and I will see if I have it.

The Lyman 45 is a very good piece of equipment. It has been superceded by the 450 and the 4500, both of which have better linkages. I think the 45, with its two guide rods, does a better job of maintaining boolit-to-die alignment, though.

It will accept any Lyman sizing die and top punch.

If it has the original brass encircled pressure nut, you may want to replace it with the updated, two-O-ring version, as the original design will leak, due to wear.

I just updated the presure nut in mine. It's a nice unit I use it a lot.

I like my 45 better than my 450. Just don't try to use it out side the parameters of it's design. It's not a swaging tool. If you horse it the handle or something else WILL break. Get an RCBS if you want to "bump" boolits or take a .327 boolit down to .316.

I do not have any instructions with this. It looks like my grandfather had it filled with some type of alox mix. It looks like I have a .311, .452, .410 and a .358 sizing dies. They all have rubber O-rings on them (36+ years old). My first project would be setting it up to lube Lee C312-185R. I know there is a compatable nose punch for this bullet. Can gas checks be installed with this unit?

Yes, it will install gas checks at th same time you size the bullet. I have a 45 and a new 4500. I keep a .309 die in the 45 and use it exclusively for 30 cal rifle.

l.g.i. .... leisure group inc. .... that's what gets me on this thread .... correct me if i'm wrong but l.g.i. acquired lyman in 1969-70 , ... in 1969 lyman was already peddling the 450 ( as opposed to the older model 45 ) the 450 came out in 1967 iirc , l.g.i. incidentally only owned lyman from 1969 to 1978 ... all this leads me to wonder - is it a #45 or a 450 ??? either way the operation for both sizers is much the same ( as are the dies and concept ) a foto would help

This unit is clearly marked No. 45 Lubricator. I will try to come back and attach a photo to this thead. I saw a thread showing a link to the manual. Thanks for everyone's help.

i'm not trying to say that it's not but the above was just sticking in the back of my mind everytime i read this thread , if you've seen the manual page and it looks like the 45 then it must be a 45 , as noted they are good sizers ( i have a few myself :P ) but if you did post a foto please try to make it of the decal with the l.g.i. on it ( that's one i havent seen and i bet a few others havent as well ) the old old decals are really cool !! around the time they changed to a aluminum top cap they more or less became a plain clear lettered affair

ahhh... i kept thinking of the years leisure group bought them out ( before they were returned to private ownership ) i've had a few #45's ( the old ones are my fav - with the cast iron top and the bolt pivot point ) i've seen 3 different labels but dont recall the l.g.i. part , in part the leisure group kept sticking in my mind ( thanx amigo ! )
