Do the boolits need to be standing on their bases or can they just be put into a container for heat treating?

Depends on how hot you get them. If you want the boolits to be just under slump (almost ready to melt) then it's best if they are standing on their base however if you are heat treating alloys at a less critical point then just putting them in the pan however they fall works just fine.

I dump them on a piece of Al foil and put on the convection toaster oven rack, set the timer @ 1 hr and wait till the buzzer goes off. The foil keeps direct heat from the coil away, air temp is 450F max, I wish it would go to 550.

It may be hotter than what the oven temp says. I use a Taylor thermometer: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004XSCA/ref=asc_df_B00004XSCA2081852?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B00004XSCA&hvpos=1o3&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=30515756177576470&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=

My first oven was much hotter than what the oven setting. My new convection oven is really close and goes up to 550 degrees I believe but I don't go over 450 to 500.
