Guess that depends on what you are hunting and what your rifle will shoot good.

are we talking gas checks or no gas checks? How fast are you pushing them?

If you're talking game animals like deer and not varmints--I would be prompted to make those calibers into soft-points as per Bruce B's method. For small game and varmints, I just use Taracorp alloy in the 24's, 25's, and 30's. I also think that 27 caliber is as small a caliber as I would use on deer with soft-point cast boolits--and would favor the 30 greatly. A soft-point Lyman #311041 in 30-30 or #311284 in 30-06 would be very fine deer medicine, I would think.

I am prejudiced toward the heavier for caliber slugs. Also ,I wonder how soon AFTER casting you plan on using those water quenched boolits. They will soften up after some time . A 24 caliber cast bullet for deer IS doable but leaves NO room for error.

Hey!! .24 caliber, then .27 caliber and .30 caliber for deer with cast bullets" Humph!!
Cast bullets for deer are sufficient if they start with a .4 (.41, .44, .45 etc). Humph! Never heard of such a thing...

LOL (I DO have a prefence for the bigger calibers for big game). That way I just use a wide flat meplat and don't worry overmuch about expansion, and such... (stated in my best hillbilly tone of voice - not making fun of hillbillies cause I pretty much are one).

Humph!! LOL
