That's correct, and I never shot them.
I got up early this morning--
The sun was shining and summer was in the air.
Julie gave me a kiss and saw the look in my eyes,
So what time will you be home she said ?. Home I said? I am home.
Sam I heard the zipper on your range bag, You have your shooting hat on and I saw you run a patch through your pistol barrel.
OH !! the range -- um--a--Oh yea--I thought I would go out for a little while and UN-ravel a few 44 mag.
So off I went with about 60 rounds of 44 and the bisly Hunter.
I got set up and after about 10 rounds a car pulls in.
Guy gets out and behind him are his three sons and his daughter.
I guess they ranged from about 12 to perhaps 18 (guessing )
Well they all were shooting 22 rifles and a couple of 9 Mill pistols.
Dad and the kids couldn't take there eyes off the big Hog leg on my bench.
It didn't take long for a nice conversation to get stated.
I asked the Dad if it would be OK for the Kids to shoot the 44 mag.
I told him the loads were soft target loads and they should be able to handle them.
Sure he said, so I did a little quick safety lecture about the single action and let the first kid dry fire a few times to get the feel of the trigger.
He watched very closely as I opened the loading gate and put three rounds in the cylinder. Well he looked at me and said,
Sir, there are three more holes in there, So I topped off the cylinder.
He did very well with all six shots and thanked me.
When I turned around the other two boys were standing in line,
Yup, 6 more rounds for each of them. The girl passed.
I think these boys thought the wild west had come alive right there and then. Wow we shot a real six gun. I tell you I don't know who felt better them or me.
So dad has this look in his eyes like--(So do I get to shoot also.)
Yup it didn't take much to have him put 6 lead plums down range.
I think if I see them again they will have some kind
of single action pistol.
We became friends, they had fun,
I showed them how to shoot a Ruger bisly hunter, made me feel good.
So those were the best 24 rounds I loaded and never shot.

Very nice, it never hurts to show a little extra care towards the youngsters in our sport, they are who are going to still be shooting those Ruger single actions when we're all gone!

The words, "Is it OK if he shoots it dad"? sure can improve a kids, (and his dad's,) day sometime.
Take a few extra 45-70 rounds if you have a real "Buffalo gun".

Sometimes it is more fun to let others shoot your play toys than to shoot them yourself......

If we don't teach young people to shoot, who will buy our guns when we are finished with them and ready for a new one?

I have taken away two guns I let a youngter shoot.
If I have to tell them something twice, I ride their *** hard. If I have to tell them a third time,,, I don't bother.
Instead,,, I take the gun away then tell them why.
Kids do not listen like we did when we were taught why, and how, too.

Wonderful, I had a similar experience with a teenage girl on the high school shooting teem and my Smith. Had a hard time convincing her that she would be shooting reduced loads, but after a few shots she was hooked.

You planted some seeds and may never see the fruit. Might be one of them ends up being president or a congressman. Might be that very story recounted by them a couple of decades in the future that swings a critical vote. Might be one of them pulls through a tight spot b/c they were carrying a 44 needed it. Might be they just have a new avenue to dream in. Whatever blossoms had to start from a seed.

That pretty much sums it up dont it? Well said sir. Your story warmed me up inside. I was expecting to read about how you made a mistake and narrowly missed blowing yourself up before realizing the error.
I am relieved, surprised and touched. Those boys will never, ever, forget that afternoon. I still remember the evening when my dad showed me his prized model 27 and taught me to shoot a pistol for the first time. That was 20 years ago now.
Thank you for sharing this special time with all of us.
