Fellers down in the garage I found amongst some old plumbing supplies what I believe is a bar of tin. Hoping to be able to add it to some WW I'm using I melted it down, (lower temp that my lead) and cast it up into some .690 roundballs. I figger it'd be easier to add to the Lee bottom pour that way. Anyways some of ya'll are real good at this stuff so here goes; a pure lead ball weighs 495gr. out of this roundball mold. The tin (I presume) weighs in at 320gr. Does this sound about right? It's hard as a woodpeckers lips and rings rather than thump as lead does. Many thanks in advance. Audie...the Oldfart..

Going by specific gravity, it's pretty close. Tin has 64% the specific gravity of lead. 64% of 495 gr is about 317 gr.

Iron Mike got it dead on. It's 317.856 grains, which is close enought to 320 gr. for me!

Here's the math:

The density of Lead is 0.409 lb. per cubic inch or (2,863 gr. per cubic inch).
The density of Tin is 0.264 lb. per cubic inch or (1,848 gr. per cubic inch).

At 495 gr. your ball is 0.172 cubic inches of pure Lead. (495/2,863 = 0.172)

So, a ball of pure Tin from your mould would be 1,848 X 0.172 = 317.856 gr.

A bullet from your mould of the mystery metal is 320 grains. Considering that no ball is perfect, I'd say that works out to about Pure Tin!
