My son-in-law brought over his new Ruger Frontier Rifle in .308. I've never seen a rifle I liked better. . . . Except I want a .358 Win.

A friend of mine has a Steyr Scout rifle in .308. Same concept with the forward mounted scope. It looks odd, but I after handling it I can see the advantages of having the scope mounted like that. Just makes it less convenient to use flip-up scope covers. (and yes, you need one in .358 Win ;) )

I have had the pleasure of a scout rifle for three years , Remington 700 ADL synthetic 308 of course. It is about all anybody needs in a rifle. You can't fog the scope in cold weather, a 2x Leupold has all the magnification a hunter can use, the loading port is open. It is a little heavy for the cartridge.............. found a Rem Model 7 made into a scout by Irv Stone the pistol barrel maker. It is a fantastic tool, 7 pounds loaded with four down and nine on the butt cuff. I really dislike conventenial mounted scopes and would much rather have good irons, like M14 sights on a bolt gun (imagine that!) . Buy one soon in 338 Fed or 358 WCF and never look back.

I might know that guy.....

When most folks look at a rifle with a forward-mounted scope, thier response is generally about how ugly it looks.
But when they shoulder it and look thru the scope, thier response usually becomes positive.
It may not be for everyone, but you really do have to try it before you knock it.

In my mind, the lightweight bolt-rifle with a forward-mounted scope is about as close to the mythical all-purpose gun as you can get.
I'm glad to see Ruger picking up on this design.

In case anyone's wondering, son-in-law ordered the rifle thru Wal-Mart and the total cost including tax was $716.50.

All those old timers who put a forward mount scope on their '94 Winnies are finally justified! Sure makes them easier to carry, eh guys?
