Just added this title to my private library. Looking forward to reading it over the summer in a hammock or a nice camp chair.

Anyone else reading Hemingway?

For all his personal daemons, nobody will ever match Poppa. Green Hills of Africa is a masterpiece.

For all his personal daemons, nobody will ever match Poppa.

No real daemons, just genetic major depression. He, his father, and his daughter and son all suicided if I remember right. Untreated major depression sounds like to me. They all tried to treat themselves with alcohol and drugs.

I agree. I'm also looking forward to finding more of his works. In the past, I've always brushed him off because of his suicide, but now I find my literary tastes have suddenly changed, leaving me hungry to read more of his writings.

Him, his father, brother and sister, and granddaughter (Mariel's sister).

I got the book Men At War by Earnest Hemingway. A compilation of short stories of war through the ages. In it is a story called "the Massacre at Matanzas Inlet, 1565 by Pedro Menendez de Aviles. The Spanish commander Menendez captured 208 Frenchmen. They seperated out the eight Catholics then slaughtered the rest since they were heathen Lutherans.

Quite a story!

Of his novels, I think my favorite is his first, The Sun Also Rises. If you like his writing style I think you'll enjoy anything of his you pick up.

All the Nick Adams stories were good. Nick is one of the autobiographical characters, keep that in mind as you read.

Neil Peart captured everything you need to know to understand Hemingway's suicide in the song "Losing it" from Signals. The subtle references will make even more sense if you've read For whom the bell tolls and The sun also rises.
