It is most likley pure lead. If you are talking about the lead ring that goes into the flange on a cast pipe joint.

Are you talking about cast sewer pipes?

If so, all that I've seen were pure (dead soft) lead poured and then tapped in over a layer of oakem.

Can be any cast iron sewage, venting or drainage lines. Pure was almost always used in the hub joints.

Pure lead and if you see any lead that looks like strings its the same stuff. They pack it into the joint and pour lead over it. Frank

I was trained to use soft lead and oakem for those joints almost 40 odd years ago. To make the joint seal correctly soft lead was the only way it really worked.Robert

The joints are soft lead and at $.25# you're almost stealing it. I probably collected 200# from contractors off of repair jobs when I was a health dept/septic installation inspector. They just buried the old pipes in the waste of the job. FREE LEAD! 10 ga

Plumbers are required to use pure lead. Part of the process of making the joints is to caulk the poured joints with flat pointed chisel looking tools. If you were to use a harder alloy the cast iron hub would crack when caulked.

Me too! And about the same time frame as well.

ALWAYS 100% pure. Part of my duties was to stack hundreds (thousands?) of 25lbs bars of the damn stuff all around the construction site where we were all going to be pouring joints. If I had all that lead now, I could supply the forum for years...
