Hey! Way to go. You DID use cast, boolits, didn't you?

I did it I got a black bear with cast bullets. rifle ruger compact 308 win. Bullet 311299. 40 gr imr4831, 1600 fps the bullet has a shallow hp to it. It was 110 yards
She stood up and I smacked her right in the chest. It was a good day. We saw a real big one but it was way up on the mountain. It was safe from me. Thought I would share my pics with everyone.

This is what they look like I'm sold on these can't wait to use them on deer. I am able to shoot a 1 inch group at 100 yards I would like more velocity than 1600 fps but it will do for now.http://castboolits.gunloads.com/imagehosting/thum_124014fc9b7c146223.jpg (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=5469)

Nice take, sir.

Good job! What you think it weighed in at 300lb give or take? And everyone says you need a "magnum" something or other to shoot a bear!

It's not a real big bear probably around five foot. My buddy took all the meat and is going to have bacon and sausage made out of it. I'm going to try to do a head mount my self. I mounted a couple deer heads in the past so with the cost of taxidermy I will see how I can do on a bear head.

Cook thoroughly. Bear carries Trichinosis. Probably most people already know that, but can't be too careful.

Remember the old rules they used to tell us about cooking pork. Well, the USDA aren't checking out the bears. No pink in the meat when served.

LC would bear be an over the counter tag in AK?

lead chucker
06-02-2012, 04:19 PM
Yup residents get a tag with there hunting license if you ask for one. I'm pretty sure nonresidents can get one over the counter but I think it's a bit pricey. I think you can get a brown bear over the counter also. Resident brown bear is $25.00 have not got one yet.

It's a Lyman 311299 I had Erik at hollow point mold service hp one cavity and extend the forward drive band on it. He does good work.

Verrry Nice! Bear hunting is on my bucket list. Also glad to see that you used a boolit in a .308. I have a friend that took a very nice elk with a "little" .308. I think the guy doing the shootin' can make all the difference when it comes to caliber and boolit placement.

try 28.5 grs of imr 4895 and a tuft of dacron.
thats a great 308 hunting load. and about 1900 out of my 20" bbl's.

I will try that would like to get a little more velocity out of that short 16.5 inch barrel.

I'm going to try a 45/70 and a 405gr cast over Black Powder this fall for bear.

Nice looking one there LC.

Well if a 200 gr 30 cal at 1600 fps works I'm sure your 45/70 should roll them over with authority.

It sounds like 1,600fps is working out pretty darned well for you as it is. I didn't think that a cast bullet at that velocity was capable of taking heavy game like a Bear at that distance. Nice shoot'n.

I was pretty confident that it would do the job if I was able to get in the vitals, so when she stood up I had a clear shot in the chest. The exit hole in her back was the size of a penny so the bullet had decent expansion. At that velocity I was going to limit my self to 150 yards. My buddy was packing a 308 with j bullets and we agreed that any thing under 150 I would shoot anything further he would take the shot. My target velocity with my 1-10 twist with a 16.5 inch barrel is any thing over 1800 fps. And I can get that but it's in the 2 inch or bigger groups at 100 yards. I'm not satisfied with that. I'm thinking of sending my barreled action off to pac nor barreling and get a 1-12 twist and a 20 inch barrel. I would love to beable to get 2200 + fps with good accuracy.

I contribute a lot of my success with this black bear to Larry Gibson and a few other on this sight that took the time to answer all my questions and help me out.

Nice one. I'm going on a hunt in Canada next year, bummer you can't take a hand gun up there. So I'm thinking a Rossi .45 LC lever or just my Marlin .30-30 Improved, either one with cast boolits.

How are you doing leadchucker?
Good to see your post! I see IMR4831 did the job!
I was suprised at how well it worked for me as well.

My cast boolet hunting was side tracked this spring!
My Lyman Lube/Sizer broke on me at the worst time!
I had only two loaded rounds left!

Depending on my work, I hope to be able to buy a replacement before fall!
Till then, its all..... "Cough!!-Cough!! Gag!!... J-word bullets again.

Take care and straight shootin!

Yep im having fun with these bullets. Just looking for the magic load that gives me the speed and accuracy I want. I think I will try IMR 4227 next. I would like to get a Lubersizer The lee system will have to work for now.
