This afternoon, as we were caught in bumper-to-bumper traffic, we noticed one of the Postal Service's handsomely painted trucks. On each side was a magnificently rendered eagle, with wings pointed straight up, poised for a powerful downstroke. What really brought home the point that this was our Federal income tax dollars in action, was that the eagle logo was also painted on the rear roll-up door. Unfortunately, this truck had been equiped with a lift gate, obscuring all but the tips of the eagle's wings. It looked like one of those internet pictures of an eagle being carried under water by a too-large salmon that the eagle had made the mistake of trying to catch. How many hundred dollars does each of these eagle painting cost? Only our politicians know for sure.

NVCrumudgeon----I think just so us old geezers cant keep abreast of things, the Air Force makes changes. For example, for years training bases came under Air Training Command(ATC). Now its AETC Air Education Training Command. How much you suspect it cost to add Education to the name? Whatever it was, was certainly worth the cost for folks to know we were not just training them, but educating them. Now folks know that as well as being trained, they are learning. For such an insignificant amount that changing all the signs, decals, letterheads and other stationary they wont be accused of merly trainging them---but are educating them too. Cant keep abreast of all of them, but several other commands have changed their name and the Air Force logo itself has been modernized. And people say Air Force not deep in tradition---heck yes they have a tradition of changing very frequently.

Just before I retired, my agency "embraced" some lettering and logo changes to allegedly update our image. This is all nice and trendy, and at least the Department is doing it sensibly--waiting until the Holsteins (black & white Crown Vic's) retire from service, and putting the new decals only on the new incoming cars that replace them. It would be nice to report that the insignia changes have affected crime rates and response times positively, but such is not the case--too many Holsteins sit in our stations undriven because staffing levels are very short. Those new decals are a big help.

Old deputies call the Crown Vic a "Holstein"--younger ones call them "Gateways".
