I am trying to make my lead go farther so I was wanting to know if mixing WW & PB in a one to one ratio will be hard enough for mild 38 SPL load at about 800 fps?

I would go 3 to 1 WW to pure for 38s at 800 fps. Make sure they fit the barrel and cylinder throats well and you would be fine.

"I would go 3 to 1 WW to pure for 38s at 800 fps."

3 WW to 1 pure, or the other way around, 3 pure to 1 WW?

3 pure, 1 WW.
That would give a pretty soft alloy. It for low velocity 38s it should be just fine.

I would agree, although I have never tried it before. You really ought to try launching 200 grain slugs out of a 38. Its a hoot, they are slow enough for what you are doing, and they are scary accurate.
Think "bowling pin @ 70 yards offhand" accurate.

For what you are doing you have several options:

4 parts pure to 1 part ww waterdropped
3 parts pure to 1 part ww air cooled or waterdropped
2 parts pure to 1 part ww air cooled

Let accuracy decide which one is the best option for you and professor gun.

I forgot to mention, I like to water drop just about everything.

1:1 works fine for me at that velocity.

I forgot to add that I am water dropping them. I will try 3 to 1 water and report back. Thanks to everybody!!!!

I have been mixing 50/50 wheelweight to pure lead for my pistol casting in calibers 45 acp, 44 special and recently 41 mag. I have loaded the 45 acp to 850fps, 44 special to 1200 fps in a ruger blackhawk and the 41 mag to just shy of 1400 fps and no leading in any of the pistols.
I do add about 2% tin to the mix and size my bullets 1-2 thousands over groove dia.

I just finished shooting the 41 mag. with the 50/50 mix to see if it would cause leading problems. Fired over 50 rounds and no lead in the barrel or forcing cone. all loads clocked between 1340-1370 fps during the shooting.

I have been having such good results with 50 pure/50 WWs that I am redoing all of my loads. I shoot 1500 fps out of my guide gun with no leading. I have so much more pure lead than WWs that was why I started that mix.

I have the opposite problem but I figure someday my ww will be worth more than lead that I can do some profitable swapping for pure.........one can hope.

What BHN are you getting with 50/50 Pb and WW? Thanks

And now we have the real important info, what do you have on hand.
Like Crabo said, if you have lots of WW, use them. If you have more pure, use more of it.

Sometimes it is more a matter of using what we have on hand than what is "ideal".

I, like 357 Max, prefer to stretch the WW I have and use more pure.

I have 2 to 1 of pure vs WW. WW is getting real hard to find here.

rmcc,

I am, at the recommedation of Bruce - Babore - a guy who used to make and sell great molds here in the Cast boolits Form, using 50/50 - WW/lead in one of his 465gr WFN - 45/70 molds and having very good results.

Bruce also advised cold water quenching and the allowing the Boolits to age a minimum of 7 days before use.

He also recommended using a .460 push through die for sizing soon after casting, then using a .461 die in the luber sizer so as not to mess up the surface hardness of the ageded boolit.

I am putting the boolit out at 1600 - 1700fps but will not hesitate going to higher velocity.

So, 50/50 should not give you any problems at the velocity your talking as long as you have good boolit fit.

Keep em coming!
