Found in a batch of soft bought from a local recycler. Any insights on the origin/intended purpose?

Looks like a cake of Plumbers Lead to me! Probably near pure.

Typically used to seal the joints, after packing them, in cast iron drain pipes.

Could be, it was in with a bunch of lead that had been stripped from cast iron pipes. Didn't recognize the name, wondered if folks with some experience around that area of the country might be familiar with it. The lead is soft, and has several strike marks/dents as pictured, so I'm thinking pure lead also.

Weigh it. If its 5#s its probably plumbers lead. Looking at the picture, there's a sprue on the right hand side where the next ingot was attached. Usually were made in 4 or 5 ingot strings as my memory serves me.

Yup, plumbers' lead. There would be a number of these attached together with sprues, often a lead handle would be on the end.
