Is there anyone here that has loads developed to shoot cast bullets in the M1 Garand for 100 to 300 yds? Not talking the usual gallery loads often discussed for cast bullet shooting in a M1 Rifle. I am seeking information on long distance shooting of cast bullets in the M1 Rifle.

Gas checked, hard alloy, proper lube and sizing, and rifle powders: anyone pioneered load development to shoot for distance in the M1 Rifle ?

If you are out there, please post or contact me.

I think it can be done. If not 300 yds, then 200 yds.

Second the above. I do pretty well (slightly better than M2 ball) with 32 gr of IMR 3895, a Lyman 311299, and 2-3 gr of polyester filler. I also do pretty well with the Bob S load of 40 gr of 4831, or 38 gr of any flavor of 4350. All of the above should cycle your action, or will if you play around with primers and powder charges.

Personally my gun really likes the 31141 group buy clone.

Other popular bullets are the 311284, Lee 200 gr, 311291, etc. Play around with what you have first.

Note, you want to make sure that it feeds and chambers without any undue resistance, as an out of battery fire (while very unlikely if everything is in spec) would be most unpleasant indeed...

311299 or, if the throat will take a 314299, over 30 - 32 gr 4895 with a 3/4 gr dacron filler. Does very well to 300 yards in M1s and M1903s, etc. Best accuracy will be in the 1850 - 1950 fps range with reliable functioning in the M1.

A few more that have done well for me are the Lee 185 and the RCBS 165 32-35 gr of 4995 with a tuft of dacron. ,Both shot well at 200 yds at our monthly CMP type matches

+1 on the RCBS-165-SIL. My mould drops 174 gr. from my 'rifle' alloy and, loaded over 37.0 gr AA2700 (w/approx. 3/4 gr. dacron fill) will definitely outshoot M2 Ball and, if I'm having a good day, comes close to matching the old M72 (174 gr. FMJBT) ammo for accuracy. Was probably a fluke but, last Sunday, shooting prone with a sandbag under my left wrist, I put an 8-shot clip into just under 7" CTC @ 300M...in front of a half-dozen sober witnesses!
