View Full Version : Slugged Bored Diameter of various .44 Magnum Leverguns?

I've heard the story that a lot of pistols run about .429 bore diameter and some .44 Magnum leverguns can run upwards of .432 (Marlin MG, for example).

Is there a brand of levergun in .44 magnum I can count on to be typical "pistol" bore diameter, or am I going to need two sizing dies and two separate kinds of ammunition?

Looking to go the ol' cowboy route and have one bucket of ammo for two guns... the elusive grail, so to speak.

Thanks!

When I still had a 44 MAG revolver and shot cast in it I used the bullets I had sized for my 44 MAG or 444 lever rifles and I run them all thru a .432" die .

Couple thousandths oversize in a bore thats supposed to .429 or larger isn't that much . When I shot alot of 30-30 rifles with cast bullets I always sized them at .312" and had no problems .

My Winchester M94AE Trapper slugs at .432". It's for sale. There's no reason that I should have to deal with an oversize bore like that.

My Marlin 1894ss slugs at .431" and I shoot .433" diameter boolits. It will chamber boolits as fat as .435"

That 434-207GC bullet you had a group buy for twice I size at .432" and it shoots very nicely in 44 MAG and 444 Marlin's .

Actually used that bullet one day to take three does during damage control season in about a minute !

my rossi and browning take 430 just fine, my model 94 with it's many grooves and slightly slower twist bbl than the rossi has, takes 431 in cast,it sees swaged 240's at 430 mainly.
many of the newer taurus- rossi's have been reported to have larger diameter bbl's.
i am beginning to think no one at a major factory has a clue how to make a proper gun any more.

I hear ya! Was thinking about asking 45 2.1 to run a Group Buy through Mihec for both the gas check and plain based versions of that design.

Maybe once the current backlog gets caught up.:bigsmyl2:

My Winchester Legacy 24" slugs out at .4295 and I use .430 in it as well as my Taurus 44mag hand cannon.

I have a Marlin Cowboy that runs just a hair under .431. I have not had real success with cast out of it. It doesn't run with the 429-421 well at all, and my 429-667 does not cast large enough. The 429-383 RN actually works the best, but I'd prefer a SWC for general purposes.

M94 I had slugged out at .430 also. Cast of .429, .430 and .432 all shot equally well.

My Marlin Micro groove 1894 measured out to .431" and I had my mold modified to cast .433" boolits. I shoot this boolit in both the rifle and my Smith 629 with no problems whatsoever.
