A local gun shop is offering a surplus powder called H108 at seventy six dollars for eight pounds. Another powder is H414. A friend asked me if I knew anything about them and I don't. Could someone tell me about these powders and what they cartridges they could be used in.

H108 = AA9 = WC820, but only within lot to lot variations. Each has to be tested separately.

Single Shot boys have used H108 for years with good results.

That's a little sketchy, but again, with AA9 data, start low and work up. H108 and WC820 are good powders in their window of usage. Also, take a look at castpics load data, there may be some info there, I do not remember.

H-108 is a very good powder for the smaller cases. It is a ball powder that is very similar to AA #9, WC 820 is H-108 that is military surplus, some is pull down powder, obtained by pulling the bullets and saving the powder from military rounds, smaller stuff like 30 cal carbine.
H-108 can have pressure spikes in larger cases. Leaves a bit of carbon that needs to be cleaned out once you feel some resistance when loading.
I use it when I breechseat, 32 cal, bench gun, chambered in a wildcat case based on the 357 Max case necked down to a 32 cal.

I would like to see if I could order some from the gun shop you are talking of.

I think H414 is Winchester 760 powder IIRC.

Dang, saw where you live. Too bad I am not coming out to see Mom anytime soon, as I come down I-15 heaing to Riverside. Wouldn't be too far a detour!!

KAF, I just talked to my friend about this gun shop and the powder in question. One thing he did say was that the man does not want to ship the powder. He said he does not have the required license and he doesn't want the hassle. My friend did buy one can of each, that is H-108, H-414 and H4831. The shop is located on 3rd street in the city of Highland, Ca. I don't know the street address.

414 is good in the 308 and x 57 cases and i have seen a few loads for the 0-6 cases.
the 4831 should be self explanitory.
it was most likely the military's version of w-748.
make sure it isn't blc-2 [it's a good powder] as there has been quite a bit of that available recently.

OK Thanks for asking. I wasn't sure if a gun shop could ship.

I'd buy all I could afford if I were you guys close enough. Especially at the price quoted.
I am down to 24 lbs +/_ of it.

Last I bought was 96 lbs of H-108. Hodgen (sp) offered it years ago at a heck of a price. I shared it with others, wished I would have kept every once of the 96 lbs.
When I went to that powder my groups in my 32-40 dropped to the best I had ever seen in my CPA. Groups size dropped about 1.5" over IMR 4227 at 200 yds.

KAK, thanks for that info on the H108. I load for two 32.40s. As I pointed out, my friend bought eight pounds of H-108 and he offered to give me some. I guess I should have said yes. I will call him tonight.
