My buddy wants to try some 500 gr. boolits in his Marlin 45-70. 20-25 would be enough to play with so he can see if he wants to go with buying a mold.

I've got stuff to trade, .358-105 SWC, .410-195 SWC, .452-230 RN, .429-25 SWC (429421 Lyman) or I can buy them.

I have a 535 grain mold but it is round nose and I assume your buddies gun is a lever gun. Might help if you told us what mould he is thinking of buying.

Geez, I thought that it being a Marlin it was obvious it was a lever gun. Did Marlin ever make anything but a lever in 45-70.

If he does buy a mold it will probably be the Lee 500 gr. GC FN. At this point I'm not sure he realizes how emphatic the Marlin may get launching 500 gr slugs so anything heavy will do for testing.

Alan,
He should check to make sure that his Marlin will cycle the 500gr. boolit. Levers are particular about cartridge length.

My Marlin would cycle the 500s but recoil was no fun. Sold off the mold a while back but I'll see if I have a few Boolits left.

I have some left over 500 gr flat nose hard cast bevel base boolits from Precision Cast Bullets Inc. Probably about 50 all lubed and ready to load. $20 shipped in the US. Also have 20 Hornady brass cases once fired for another $5 in the same package.

I can send you some 465 gr boolits that work great in my 1895M-450 Marlin. PM me if interested.

The only mould that I know of that will work in a Marlin is the RCBS 45-500, all the others are made for single shot rifles.
