I will be getting a new Buffalo Classic Tuesday 45/70 I have never had a totally new rifle so I need to ask some questions. I know to clean any trash the manufacture left in the action but I will be shooting cast boolits from this rifle. I have some jacketed bullets I can load if necessary, should I shoot a number of j bullits to break it in or just use my cast?
If I use the J bullets how many would be a good number, I have 100 300g and 100 405g Speer bullets I got in a trade years ago.

A j bullet has never been down the bore of mine. It likes the Lee 450-F in pure lead w/Pyrodex or WC860.

Thanks! That is what I was thinking. I have that mold and a LEE 405 HB and a Lyman 300 will try a few of all to see where I am at also have two jugs of 872and one of 860.
Think I will trade the J bullets for something I want to use.

I use some bronze wool on a brush to snag off any burrs then try the cast. If you notice leadding feed it about 100 condums and clean the he77 out of it and it should be good to go.......Buck

Have never found a J blt. to be as accurate in my #1 45-70 as cast. My pet load is 26 gr. of 2400 under 457124. Not that hard on the shoulder, and will stay well under 3" at 100, and occaisionaly approach or hit the 1" mark. Good luck!

Freightman, I use the Lee 405 HB and Lyman 457124. These are loaded atop of 4gr. 4198 and enough WC872 to give a lightly compressed load to keep the two powders from mingling together. Groups average around 3 1/2 - 4 inches at a hundred yards with my lousy eyesight. I size the boolits at .457...Ray

Freightman... did you get the e-mail I sent you? I haven't heard back and with the questions you're asking here I just wondered if you got your mail.

The reasons I mentioned using j-bullets to break-in is because they'll burnish the bbl. quicker than cast bullets. It takes forever to break-in with cast when compared to using jacketed. Some consider it some sort of sin to use any jacketed bullets, but then that's what is called having our own opinions. My mail to you just told what has worked for me. And judging by the results I mentioned in the letter it must be working pretty good.

You might want to clean the barrel with regular solvent first. Then get some JB bore compound and wrap a patch around a 44 cal brush and load the patch with the compound and run the patch/JB through you bore about 10 times. Change patches and do again. You might have to put some more on the patch at about 5 strokes. You should notice it gets easier at about 30 trips down the bore. Dont forget to use a drilled out case to protect the chamber!. When you are done, use a can of carb cleaner (outside!) and spray the bore to help clean it and run a couple of patches with solvent to get ALL the JB out. I then run a patch that I have put moly bore prep on it, down the bore. you might use TW25B lube, or Kroil also, to help get a film of lube in the bore. run a dry patch down the bore and start shooting.
