View Full Version : Down sizing a boolit?

I bought a Lee 8MM Karibiner boolit mold from Midsouth. The 'as cast' diameter is .326. Last night, I was finishing up sizing and checking a batch I had cast and, just for kicks and giggles, I ran one through a .311 sizing die. I was really surprized that it came out looking like it did.

I think it would be interesting to work up a load for a 238 grain boolit in .30 caliber. You wouldn't be able to push it very fast, but, boy, what a thumper it would be!

I also size 323471, 323470 and C325-190-FN GBs down to .314, .316 and .318 for use in various cartridges none of which are .30s. The reason is the nose of that bullet will be too big to go into the bore. If you have a bushing sizer with several bushings you could probably size it down to .30 to fit a .30 cal. I've sized the nose of some of the C325-190-FNs down to .304 for a couple .31s but it does add several steps to the process and, in the end, only worth the effort if that's the only bullet you have to work with. However, with some long throated .31s (over size 7.62x54R, 7.65 Belgian and .303s) and smaller .318 bored 8mm's the sized down bullets fit fine. How that longer bullet would fit without deep seating remains to be seen.

Larry, I'm not extremely serious about this. Truth be told, I just like to experiment with stuff like this to see what happens when I try it. Ya' never can tell, one day, I might stumble on the theory of relativity!
