Hi,

I have searched the forum and there are many 'Best Molds' from the Lyman stable.

I am shooting a single shot Baikal .223, 1/12 twist.

Because double Lyman molds are $NZ150 in this country it is impractical and expensive to just buy all ( or the current three) of the Lyman .224 molds and see which one shoots the best.

I am testing 11-12 grains of 2400 powder at a 100m range, so I believe either the 225415 or 225438 would be best guess from what I read.

Is there anyone with practical experience with either of these that could take the guess work out of the equation for me.
Appreciate your comments, Thanks.

I like the 225415, it works well for me. But, so does the 225462. It is a little heavier but works fine in my .222 and IIRC it is the boolit that Larry Gibson swears by. It should stabilize in you gun as it does in my K-Hornet with a 1 in 12.

I would suggest a custom mold from one of our fine custom mold makers, I know Miha is running a 22 caliber mold currently and NOE has a couple of great 22 caliber designs. Not sure what shipping charges would be but I wouldn't think it would be much more than what you say a Lyman is, and you won't have to take the chance of the Lyman being small as so many are from them these days.

Don't forget the RCBS 55 FN spitzer, shoots great out of my 12 twist Hornet.

The 225415 is a very good small game bullet. The FN makes a real rabbit stopper. PM me and I can post you some to try if you like.

Also check out Cast Bullet Engineering (www.castbulletengineering.com) in AU. Jim makes amazing moulds.

Jeff, have that 225215 hollowpointed and it goes from being a rabbit stopper to a rabbit stomper !

I would recommend either the 225415 or the RCBS. Both excellent for target and hunting.

The 225415 is an excellent bullet, especially for game, as is the RCBS version but accuracy can be difficult much over 1900 fps because of the long unsupported nose, even in the 12" twist. The 225438 while a RN is an excellent bullet that can be pushed to 2400 fps in your 12" twist with good accuracy. It can be HP'd or FP'd easily enough with a Forster 1/16" HP tool or FP'd during sizing. If you can find a 225462 that is, indeed, my recommendation as the best .22 cal cast bullet if the throat is long enough so the GC is not seated below the case neck in the .223. Of course it works great in the longer necked 22 Hornet and the .222.

I flat point my 225438 by using a 215 top punch. Really thumps prairie dogs etc. As far as 225462, I paid $75 for a single cavity on E-Bay 3 years ago, found a new unused double cavity for $35 six months later. Going to HP the single cavity and a single 225438 that I just got. Like to send Erik a couple at a time, saves on the shipping.LOL
