I am using 30-1 alloy in my pot for my black powder rifles. I plan on using the same alloy for my 44 special light loads. Could I get away with using this blend in my 30-40 krag? Anyone tried this? It would sure make things alot easier.

It can require you to change your brand of lube or hold your velocity down is all, but you can make it work. Especially if you are using a GC.

Michael;

We single shot (read schuetzen) shooters shoot plain base bullets of 1-20 to 1-30 aloys in the 1400 - 1500 fps range without leading. Powders used are slower pistol powders, from Accurate #7 through 4227 or 4759. A gas check probably allow a couple hundred mor fps with 1-30 alloy with the same powders or maybe into the fast rifle powder range. I personally load 14.5 gr of 4227 behind a 220 gr .321 bullet cast of 1-25 alloy so the of-mentioned charge o 16 gr of 2400 behind a gas-checked 1-30 bullet shouldn't be a problem with good lube in a .30-40 if the bore is decent.

Hi Don H,
You are the first person I have seen that makes mention of using AA#7 in a rifle. I know you mentioned .32-40 but was thinking of maybe using this in reduced loads in .30-30. I have a pound which is sitting not being useful for anything I shoot. Just would like to have an idea if anyone has gone this route in .30-30 or anything else for that matter.

In fairness, I have not used AA#7 personally. Maybe I shoud not have included it in a post in which i talked about the .32-40. The guys I know about who use or have used #7 were using it in smaller cases, albeit in the same lead bullet aplications. I have used H-108 (which is virtually the same as AA#9) And many use #9. It works well in the .32-40 and I see no reason why it would not work equally well in .30-30 since case capacity is similar. With either of these ball powders (or any of the pistol powders ecxepting 4759) beware of double-charging in the size case in question. With H-108, or WC820, which is essentially the same, I would start around 12.0 gr and work up. 13.0 grains is about the heaviest charge I have heard mentioned.
These charges are used in CPAs, 44 1/2 Stevens, Win. 1885s, and more modern SS actions like the Miller, Peregrine, etc. They are not for Ballards.

Dale53 may be able to comment more on AA#7.

Don

BTW, the .30-30 sees some use in the type shooting I refer to here.

Thanks Don for clearing that up. AA#9 sounds logical but I haven't tried any of that in reduced loads yet.
