I stopped by the local scrap yard today (the one that doesnt sell to the public) to get my tin tested with their handy dandy gun. Right when i walk through the door i see a FULL 55gal drum filled to the top with spent brass. Ruined my day. The guy said that its mainly from the military and a few ranges. He also told me that they have to sell to someone with a comercial license. I wonder how hard that would be to come by?

Before Clinton's reign, the military sold brass to anyone for scrap prices. I knew a couple of old boys who bought 18 wheeler lots of it. During good ole Bill's error (is that the right spelling?) I was told that the DOD changed its policy and only sold to commercial recyclers who smelted it down. Don't know if that is the true story or not. Simply what I have been told.

My local scrap yard will let me buy range brass for what they paid for it and bring back what i dont want. Got a ton of 9mm 40 and .45 brass. Also got about a gallon of .22 brass and a little mixed rifle brass. Think I ended up with 8 or 10lbs of 9mm bout the same of 40cal, 200 .45 rounds and the .22 and mixed rifle for 40 bucks I think. It was a full 5gal bucket. Need to trade back the .22 and 40 for lead there.

As I remember it the DOD was going to require all used brass to be destroyed and then sold as scrap. There was such a stink made over it that they scrapped that plan and continue to sell it for resale as once fired brass as they had been doing.

my local scrap place wont sell to the public anymore either. I dont understand why if Im willing to pay them a decent price. Is there some federal pressure on these places or is it strictly business?

Inert means (in this case) that it has been fired. Except for those too dented or dinged, it can all be reloaded.

I am thinking about how I can use that 105mm brass for a new wildcat cartridge. Maybe neck it down to 76mm with an Ackley Improved shoulder...

I believe that if the brass is bought from the government, the buyer has to sign an End Use Certificate, (EUC) telling them what they plan on doing with it. If they say they are going to sell it to someone to melt down and instead it goes to someone who reloads it, then they have to answer for that.

There was a big stir over the fact that the Department of Defense had ordered all of the brass had to be mutilated before it was taken off the premises. That has since been reversed, as it was depriving taxpayers of both revenue (brass cases bring more than brass scrap) and a chance to get back something they had bought in the first place.

Here is a link explaining the reversal:

More gov b.s... Sure would be nice if they could sell smaller lots.

Check here: http://www.unclesamsretailoutlet.com/shop-brass.html

Right now they have 5.56 and 50 cal. They sometimes have 7.62 as well. Expect a scrap rate of about 5 - 10%, depending on where it came from. A lot of this has been fired in automatic weapons, that may or may not have correctly adjusted head space. Learn how to check for incipient case head separation and CHECK each case before use.

It's good brass, I especially like the WCC and the Fc cases. Sometimes you run across some interesting headstamps in your purchases.

The real waste was the MK48s they are selling out of JAX FLa. They went for 8 to1 5K. Some had less than 100 miles on them. The gov spent over $150K each to buy them for the USMC.
At least with brass the goverement uses it once and gets back near market value for the leftovers in terms of brass.

Looked it up. Originally 261000 dollars, it's basically an off road semi. Question is why are they liquidating? Surely they can use them somewhere?

Merlin you should known better there is no way in .... They would sell a saw or torp to you or me, unless........ Holder wants it to go to Mexican drug cartels.
