I have been loading 450 grain .458 cast flat nose plain base bullets for my 45-70 using 39 grains of imr-3031, I have suddenly run out and a new supply, and here on Maui takes about 3 months wait the only dealer not stocking to many powders. I have plenty imr-4064 I can use but can't seem to locate any load data with this combination. Anyone have a load they like using 450 grain bullets and imr-4064, or have the "Load from a Disk" program to cross referance 3031 to 4064? THANKS!

Use 4895 data, it's virtually the same stuff. Use the usual precautions, start low and work up.

...........Use your 39.0gr load as a starting load to begin using IMR4064. I don't know what you're shooting, but in a strong modern rifle you can just about use a casefull of IMR3031 under a 405 gr. Since IMR4064 is slower then IMR3031 your moderate 39.0gr load would create no issues with IMR4064 and a 450gr slug.

If I was at home instead of at work I could go out and get a IMR4064 load with 450gr slugs from my notebook. However these were worked up on a bolt action.

Buckshot- Thanks for the suggestion, can you post your 4064 load from your notes? My rifle is a bolt action Gibbs Summit Frontier rifle based on Lee-Enfield action rated at 45,000 cup so my shoulder will give out long before the gun does. Doing some simple math I calculated that I can increase 4064 volume over 3031 by 7% to get comperable performance at slightly lower pressures. I plan on shooting mostly hotter Trapdoor level loads, I hope 4064 agrees with cast plain base bullets.
My apologies with late reply, my mom passed away on April 4th and I have been dealing with the situation helping my dad with this loss.

Seems like I've posted this before for someone else but here goes.... You can pretty much substitute 4895 data for 4064 data and sensibly start low and work up. Varget and AA2520 are two other powders that also have a similar burning rate. Each powder in each circumstance has its own individual characteristics. All of which brings you back to this one simple point: Using IMR 4895 starting load data gives you a starting point for working up loads with any of these powders. The final data YOU develop will be most appropriate for your gun and your components; what worked well for someone else may not work well for you and it is likely YOU could develop a better load for YOUR rifle.

I have used 4064 in my 45/70 with good results. It burns very dirty unless you are loading near max.

I use Lyman #457102, 445 grain gas check with IMR 4064. I'm using some where around 50 some odd grains, in a Siamese Mauser. I got my data from Ken Waters article in Handloader back in the 70s.
