I am about to do some boolit loading for the .308 my question is; do any of you use any filler in the cartridges where the case volume is considerably low? For example; H110, Unique, SR 7625, Red Dot, where there is say 15g or less powder in a case that will hold near 50g. It seems to me like having the powder against the flash hole would be in my favor for consistency as far as ignition is concerned. Thoughts and info are welcomed, thanks.

i am not a fan of the fillers with powders faster than h-322 that includes aa-2230 which is right next to it.
some of the slower pistol powders are better if they are against the flash hole and a rifle primer is used, but they usually don't need a filler.
if i need a filler with them i switch powders or move to the rifle powders and use one there.

i use 18 grs of 2400 in the 308 with either large primer but the rifle gives me better groups, i tilt the primer down all the way into the rifle and chamber carefully.
28.5 grs of 4895 gives me about the same velocity and here i use a filler, the groups are somewhat smaller so i feel the extra work is worth it on target.
i also use it when hunting as i don't know if i am gonna shoot uphill or down.

Sometimes I do, what ever you do do not add or remove it once you worked up your load.

Hunting was a concern I had, if I work up a good load the uphill/downhill would be an issue. In the field it seems nothing is ever the same as it is on the bench so any variables that can be eliminated would be for the best.

try the 28.5 and a grain of filler with a lr primer.
use a slightly soft lube...

I would not recommend any of those powders with a filler or a wad. I would not recommend H110 in that application at all. As runfiverun suggests 28.5 gr of 4895 with a 1/2 - 3/4 gr dacron filler is a good "generic" load. Depending on bullet weight "for hunting"(?) it may be plussed up to around 32 gr with a 10" twist barrel. If a 12" twist then a slower powders such as RL19 or AA4350 will be better served. Whether or not a filler is needed with those will depend on the bullet weight and loading density. If the loading density is 80 - 85% then the filler probably is not needed.

We might be able to answer better if we knew;

The rifle
The twist
The cast bullet mould, alloy and weight

that will be fine with the load.
