So OK IO got a garbage sack of dental x-ray lead . I took all the foil out of the little pouches and maybe got 2# of lead .. is this usual or is there more I need to ask the dentist to save... this haul may make 20 bullets and took an hour to sort.
thanks ......................Dean

That sounds about right. Dental x-ray lead is a slow way to build up lead. Also, wear gloves when taking the lead foil out of the pouches, those have been in direct contact with saliva. You don't want to pick up an infection!

This dentist has wiped them all off with disenfectant . smells like the back of a bar almost .... very sanitary..........thanks for the heads up...........Dean

I do not believe it to be a way to build up lead ... I think finding a truckload would be a way to build up lead .......or shoot dry bullets real fast that are wrong sized........but not dental foil....

Dean ... every 6 months when I go to the dentist, I get a 30 - 50# sack of the X-ray shields. And the paper backers are ALL REMOVED :-D

I get about 50+ lb. or so of this stuff a year, mostly with the plastic off, but not all of it. I pick most of the plastic out, but like wheel weights with the little left over chunks of yellow crayon, miss some. As long as you do your smelting outside when there is a bit of wind, it works fine, and the lead is about as pure as you will run into.

I'm sure that X-ray lead isn't pure. Take a look at the pic below. On the right are .375 BP conicals and .375 round ball I cast about 5 years ago using X-ray lead. They are still bright and shiney like alloy lead, and they are harder to scratch with a thumbnail, but they do scratch. On the left are some .380 conical hollow points and some .375 round ball cast from pure lead. They were made 2 years ago and they have turned that dull gray that pure lead always turns. This is what leads me to believe that X-ray lead isn't pure. It may be something like a 30 to 1 alloy, but that is just speculating without any real way to test the hardness.

We used to have a little company in town that would savage silver out of x-ray film. Are you guys sure you want to shoot like the LONG RANGER?
