Just got done casting some big 45 cal boolits. WoW, this is my first big bore rifle mold, the boolits are BIG! RD's 460-425 sure does suck up lead FAST, only trouble is keeping that pot full of alloy! Any way I need load data to use in my marlin GBL in 45-70. I'd like to have a 1200fps load for a plain base boolit using unique or trail boss and full power 1800fps plus for hunting. I have varget and h4895 on hand for full power loads. What you guys run under ranch dog's boolits? Whats the good starting point using varget and h4895?

Thanks

I'm using only IMR SR 4759 for Guide gun reloading the RD 460-420 as I don't like the recoil and/or accuracy problems when using other powders. For the same reason I generally load the RD 460-340 which is plenty for deer and hogs. Makes shooting a lot more fun, is not position sensitive, and fills the case better. I know it's not the powders you asked about, but IMHO it will make your shooting experience much more pleasant. You will not need a gas check to about 1700 fps, maybe less, but anything exceeding that will probably do best with one. The Lee 459-340 plain base will do nicely up to that same threshold.

I have used IMR3031 and IMR4198 for my guide gun running the 405 J-word Speer bullets at close to 1700, and I can tell you that in the Marlin it is rough on your shoulder - you WILL need a good recoil pad for that level of load. I did get close to 1800, but it was too much recoil and the stock eventually cracked just behind the receiver. YMMV.

Don't know where I started at? H4895 48.8 gr for 1730 fps, Varget 52.5 gr for 1780 fps. Cut the charge some and work up. These are safe in my 1895 no signs of high pressure. Should be around 28,000 psi. Accuracy edge goes to H4895 but not by much.

Handloader Magazine August 2007 # 248. Has 45 70 data from 21,000 psi to 43,500 psi. I reference this one alot.

No experience with Trail Boss and I generally don't recommend Unique with that heavy a bullet in the 45-70. 4895, especially H4895, works very well for the heavier loads. Start at 45 gr with a 1 - 1 1/2 gr filler and work up to 1800 fps. At 80% load density drop the dacron filler. You didn't mention the alloy but don't be surprised, unless the bullets are case hard, if accuracy isn't all that good above 1500 - 1600 fps.

46.0 of 3031 or 28.0 of 2400 works for me.

I'm shooting a Lyman 405 Gr PB FN over 48-53 gr of IMR 4895. In a NE Handi rifle. 53 is a lot stoughter than I want to shoot more than once or twice off my hind legs. Bench shooting it with 53 gr. is brutal. I settled on 49 Gr for my deer load. Good accuracy and doesn't kill on both ends. Tried 5744 but has not been as accurate as the 4895 so far. RD

JJC did you chronograph those loads or is it from the book? I shot some 425s today and got av. vel. of 1645fps from 48gr H4895. Also shot some rd 460-350 loaded with 52.7gr H4895 and av vel was 1720 fps. Seems to be a bit low, maybe my chronograph isn't working right?

I like 5744 + rel7- shoots good with both rd bullets

My favorite load with the RD 425 is 45 gr of H322, this gives me 1700fps out of a 1895 XLR and 1750 out of my 1886 winchester. Will shoot clean through moose and elk, I use the 350 ge RD for deer
