I probably run several thousand rifle boolits per year and the last two weekends I have sent 20 Lb of lead into the berm 200 grains at a time so who knows?

Almost an exact mirror of what I shoot except I also send a lot of 223 down range as well.

I probably go close to 5k, mostly in revolvers but some in rifles. Nearly everything I shoot is cast so that really cuts down on my shooting time. I salvage most of my lead, make my own lube so it doesn't cost me much per shot. Truth be told building the ammo is about as much fun as shooting it up.

I've got 90 acres to shoot on so we do a lot of it. Pistols, Rifles, Muzzle Loaders, Shot guns, clay birds, you name it. I do salvage as much lead as I can. Also live close to a public outdoor range I like to hit a couple of Times a month to shot and to salvage brass, lead etc.

I voted the 1k -5k and I see that I'm in the majority with the rest of you .
If I can ever afford to retire I'm sure that my round count will go up.
Most all of what I shoot I cast myself. A few condoms here and there.
.22, .357, .45, .30, .40,.50 rb , and .54 rb.

It is no big to deal to burn through 250 round of 45acp per range visit, so more than a thousand is easy. Just wish I could get to the range more than once every couple of months.

The last few years I have been over 20K.

12.5K in 45acp last year.
7K 22rf.
About 800 9mm.
1.2K shells shooting clays.
500 slugs
200 OO Buck shot.
200 38spec.

This year I am going to cut back. I going to work on inventory for now.

Probably 1 to 2 thousand a year. Probably 20 thousand a year 25 years ago and now that I just retired I plan to return to my old habit.

Mainly .45 ACP with a couple K .223 also like to shoot the cannon as much as possible. But shot and powder plus getting it out limits that to around 100 rds a year.

On average over 10K per year, with at least 95% being cast.

fredj338

Not as much as I used to. When I was shooting CAS, I would run through 1000rds/m just for me, then the wife & son, 3K/m was not unusual. Now I am shooting IDPA. BEtween that & plinking & training, close to 10K rds/yr. Mostly 45acp, but I load for 20+ calibers, so a little of everything.

I put down for 5-10K, most of that in various rifle and pistol caliber for IHMSA. I also do a little Metallic Rifle. and CAS. I am getting back into trapshooting after a 7 years break, so after this year I will easily be in the 20+K group. I know 7 years ago I would easily register 5-8K in birds, figure at least double that in practice so between 15-24K in a summer shooting the shotgun. Yes I reload for the shotgun but no I don't cast for it.

20k +

As an executive member of my gun club, as well as a financial backer of rifle and pistol ranges construction in 1990, I feel it's my duty to utilize my investment. Just yesterday wife and I fired 270 rounds but we had limited time. Having good shooting weather year-round contributes to my habit so we shoot at least every week; more if a match is coming up. And this doesn't even count Sporting Clays, Trap and Skeet.

I cast for my U.S. Firearms 45 LC, my fun gun, and my 40 cal Glock.
(Yes, I have an aftermarket barrel in it)
I have spoiled them by not using anything but cast boolits in them.

I use them for target practice, you know, shoot at something to see how many times you can miss it.:bigsmyl2:

Probably now in the 1-2k range but, with my wife, daughter and son all getting in on the action, totals are climbing! Hence the new interest in casting! (They are getting tired of "ONLY" getting to shoot the 22 Buckmark on some days......) Talk is cheap - takes cash money to fill up rounds! If you can find a way to strech that a bit farther, more the better!

I probably average 400 pistol (.45 ACP, .38 spc., .45 Colt, 9mm) per month, maybe 100 rifle (mostly .30 cal cast out for the 1903 and Garand), plus 4-5 rounds of skeet every couple of weeks. Also, other guns/calibers as it strikes my fancy. I guarantee it would be a lot more if I could shoot on my own property.....maybe someday.

You have my profound thanks for your splendid service yet I am jealous that I am too old to have participated myself. There is nothing quite like the report of the M68 or its derivitives, the rock of the platform and the resounding clang of the ejected shell casing. Ah, the smell of the burned propellant, the whine of the turret blower motor and the heat of firing.

Since lead shot went stupid a few years ago I no longer shoot registered clay's ,I also no longer shoot pins as that seemed to have fallen apart around here. I haven't enjoyed shooting practical pistol at the indoor clubs since they all want me to join the club.
With all that said I still get out and shoot around 4k rounds per year maybe more last year but on average 4k a year over the past 5 years.
If shot prices would come down were a poor man can buy it again and I could find a club that doesn't require me to be a member to shoot practical pistol then that number would defiantly go up again. Another game that would be fun is ICOR but don't know of any around here that does it.

I grew up in a big city and only got to shoot 2-3 times a year when I was a junior/senior in HS, but it was enough to get me hooked. Graduated from college and moved back to the city but couldn't really afford range time or ammo. Moved to the country 4 years ago but was too busy with farm projects to consider shooting much. Evenings and weekends are still pretty busy, but this past fall I found an indoor range a few minutes from the office that I can run to at lunch. This was just the ticket to get me going again. I have now built my backstop at the house and can easily go out to 175 yards, giving me a good place for testing handloads. I am totally hooked again, probably 3000+ rounds in the past 3 months.

I put all my primers from January 1 for the year in a quart coffee container and I just fill it even to the top. That is not counting the rimfire I shoot and I lose track of how many that is. I know the cases of 5000 sure come and go awful fast. Any more 90 percent of the centerfire fired are pistol divided between 45 and 32 long with 10 % or so 9mm. -- Bill --

I picked up a Gen 4 Glock 21 last week and I decided to do something that I was always curious about. I'm keeping a log of how many rounds I shoot out of the pistol. I shoot exclusively reloads and mostly cast bullets. I was kind of surprised to see I already have 500 rounds out of the gun in a week.

Now that I'm retired I've been shooting about 3 to 4 times a week in my back yard range. Which is a little more than I shot when I was still working as a street cop in one of America's most dangerous cities. I shoot a lot of 45, 223 and 12 gauge. I'm guessing I shoot close to 20,000 a year. I would have never thought that. I do know I buy a lot of primers!

I just about hit the 1000 to 4999, then I realized that I purchase 3000 rounds of .22 a year. I stockpile some but shoot at least 2000 a year. And that pushed me over the top. I shoot most of those in 9mm and 45acp, and .223. I would say 2000 combined. After that the .44special and .38special are the most common. I would say 1000 of those combined. Bolt guns are probably less that 500 a year. and the same in 12ga.

what a big mix. i assume a lot of you guys are shooting cast because you're on this forum, or you plan to do so soon.

its nice to see that casting is fast and efficient enough for the high volume USPSA types yet can be accurate enough for the lower volume rifle match guys and just about any other firearms discipline

i love the fact that this runs from one end of the spectrum to the other with great benefits from end to end.

Roughly 10k per year.

Most of my shooting for the last few years has been steel competitions with my xd pistol(I have probably 30k through this gun since 2005). I run through an average of 400 rounds of 9mm per match (competition and practice rounds afterward) and we have matches on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays. I have skipped a few matches lately though. I use my other guns for range fun after the match and once in a rare while I take the other guns out for a half day of plinking. I try to spend a day shooting skeet at least every other month. My newest toy is a Smith 460 and now I am starting to cast again.

No I don't have a problem either.....Really....Well, maybe...I am just going to blame it on the Castboolits forum. I have an old RCBS mold, with lots of splinters scattered around it, sitting next to my lead pot right not. The bullets looked nice and although shaped more oval than round, will probably shoot OK for light loads.

I am just getting back into casting (only did it a little bit as a teen) and I am ordering an MP mold for my 460. I could buy a lee, but you guys had to run your mouths about the high end molds. :groner: And those guys that made youtube videos of how slick the MP molds work-what were they thinking. [smilie=b: I planned to cast to save money on ammo for the hand cannon, and now I am spending big bucks on a top of the line mold for a plinking gun. Oh well.......I love good tools anyway. :lovebooli

The last few years I have averaged a bit over 10k/year, with most of that coming in early spring and summer. A majority of my shooting is pistol and .22. I don't have an easily accessible area to shoot rifle as much as I'd like.

To ask that question another way - How much do you shoot?
My answer would be, "not enough".

If you count rimfire, probably around 1000 rounds a year, maybe more. 2011 was an all time high for me because I joined a private club, but 2012 has been somewhat slow.

yeah i think next time i do a poll i'll add in some quirky but true choices.

i was just loading some .45 acp grinning from ear to ear knowing that i smelted the lead cast the boolits and loaded my own ammo. thats a pretty cool thing.

its nice that we're able to do that and provide ourselves with tons of ammo. being self sufficient is something to be proud of.

I shoot about two boxes a week in my 1911 in an indoor range and once a month we take the muzzleloaders and AR-15's to the ranch and hunt hogs. Those weekends we probably shoot between 25 and fifty .50 cal blackpowder boolits and two hundred .223's in the AR's.

it changes year to year.
for a while i was registering 15k a year plus practice.
and then shooting other stuff for fun.
primers were under 50.00 for 5k then, i was buying shot by the ton and you could buy powder in 12 up through 50 lb kegs.
three years ago i went through 24 lbs of 4895 in a two month period shooting cast,i also went through 1200 lbs of lead that year.
last year it aa-2230 that got used the most 24 lbs of that, 8 lbs of 4895, 4 lbs of herco, 4 lbs of unique, 2 lbs of aa-1680, and over 3 lbs of 800-x.
some h-322 and almost 8 lbs of 2400 went out the bbl's. plus some other stuff like 4227,4756,h-110,4350,rl-19,and 4831 went down range too.
i was on the filling end of it all, not so much the emptying as in the past...
this year, so far, i have been doing pretty good about 150-200 rounds a week. so i'm on pace for about 5k this year.
the rest of the family will get in about 2-5k each also. so it looks like about 17k rounds this year at this rate.
no wonder i spend so much time in the garage and gun room.

Buddy
03-23-2012, 03:03 AM
Over 5k since I retired. If it runs on gunpowder or gasoline I'm probably right in the middle of things. I'm going to increase my time at the bench. I loaded 850rnds of 45acp last week. Just bought 1k IMI 223 empties so I can stay busy for a while prepping those pesky military cases. By the way I researched IMI and all their brass made before '90 was manufactured by Lapua. In 1990 Lapua sent a team to Israel and designed/set up Israeli Military Industries ammunition plant. Lucky me, the ones I bought are pre '90.

I answered in the <4999 category to be conservative. I've loaded more rounds than that in the last year but haven't kept pace with the shooting. I've found loading and casting to be *almost* as fulfilling. When I was shooting USPSA/IPSC years ago I'd shoot 30,000 rounds in a year and never flinch, except when it came time to buy all the components to keep going. I'm content to be off that pace, but I could really stand to shoot more than I currently do.

Wow, many of you guys shoot more in a year than I did in my life!

I find that with returning to active shooting that it is a pain to get set up. Many local clubs are not accepting new members, Component supply, choice, and price suck. To start I bought a modest rifle collection that I thought would be fun. My old 444. a 32-20 lever, a Lee Enfield 303, and a 32 Winchester Special. There are many days I wish it was 223, 308, and 30-30.

I am stubborn enough to see this through but now understand why our activity is slowly reducing in numbers here in Canada.

I voted under a 1000 but my goal is to be up around a 1000 per rifle not counting the 22s soon.

40S.. the long gun registry is just about officially gone. We will no longer be required to register rifles and shotguns. Our PAL, the permit to own and acquire, is still required. Its kinda like a federal drivers licence for buying guns and ammo.

Handguns and many black rifle and shotgun styles remain restricted and require registration and strict control on their use. We are better than most Euro countries but firmly controlled compared to most American jurisdictions.

It is refreshing to have a major gun control reg rolled back. It hasn't happened ever here. Now my hunting guns are easier to legally transport and use. Farmers and trapers still vote here and this was much appreciated. I dread the day that they try and disarm us.

It angers me that I cannot own an FN FAL as a memory of my Artillery days. I consciosly volunteered to carry one to certain death for my country if asked. Now I'm a criminal if I own one!

Too cool.... and the best part is the price.

I too miss the old 105. I was qualified on the 155 but my battery was a close support howitzer battery. One of my fondest Artillery memories was a joint shot with the US Army and Armoured folks in Yakima Washington. Our equipment was ancient in comparison but we sure had a fun time. Except for that soda pop they kept calling beer!

13,200 rounds. Gives me a nose bleed thinking about it. One thing about the 105, your never far from the action. These remote piloted drones and GPS guided missiles are changing things. Still, it was terrifying watching a battery rain steel on a position when the crews are dialed and working hard.

Thanks for your service, much appreciated.

Not sure exactly how many rounds maybe 3000 through my muzzleloaders and just over a 1500 in black powder cartridge rifle. Comes to about 25 or 30 pounds of black powder per year. Then 4 or 5k 45 acp and maybe 1000 various other things

Probably less than a thou. last year, but since I've started casting, that number is going up quick. I currently only cast for 222, LOTS of load developement & a huge learning curve. Should have started with something bigger I guess, oh well, I'll get it worked out.

well my son was just born a few days ago. i thought i was going to get more range time this year, looks like that will put a damper on it a bit. well worth it though ; )

he was about a day old when i started to explain the basics of reloading, die set up etc. i think he'll be hooked in no time!

once things settle down i'll just try to double down on my range time thats all

I picked <4999 but didn't consider the times I take my kids and grand kids shooting. We have burned thru 1500 22lr and 2 or 3 hundred .223 and at least a few hundred 45acp and 9mm in a single outing. I burned 100 9mm just today to check to see if my new load would lead a barrel. I am just getting started casting but I think my shooting volume is about to go way way higher.

With myself and my children we try to go to range once every three months or once a quarter occasionally in the spring summer and fall months we will go twice a quarter trips started out with my two oldest boys and had developed into the entire family including my wife which cannot stand my addiction with firearms keeping in mind my oldest child is 27 years of age and that my baby is 6 years old now while the six-year-old does not find much fascination with this she does like to take her little pink cricket and plink with their older brothers and sisters or my 7 8 and 15-year-old boys and their 17 and 21 24 an 27-year-old sisters flatware out trap range in the other 20-year-old and 25-year-old boy absolutely enjoy regular target shooting and long-distance target shooting by the way folks I wouldn't be standing on the other end of thousand yards if they had cause extremely proud of both of those two young men and then about two weekends a month we get together and go to the reloading room and reload 10 or 12 hours a day on day of the weekend is a wonderful time for all generally we cook a big meal or in the warm months for me as a middle-aged man of 50 to still get to spend that kind of time with my children is absolutely fantastic and I do believe my estimation on the pole may even be a little low but a good time is had by all

not 1000 rounds at a time with my kids but close too it. I agree that the shooting amounts are hit or miss with the Army sending me off to who knows where sometimes...but if I count my troops as my kids than I can blow through 1000's of rounds in a day sometimes :)

Though I've been to the range less this year I think casting will definitely help me keep up with last years numbers

I tried some USPSA matches a few years ago and loved it. I have made it to all of the local matches and a couple of not so local matches this year. So far I have shot around 1200 rounds of 45 ACP (%100 cast) for myself and 1200 rounds of .40 for my son.

I am in the 5K-9999 range.

Although this has been a slow year with my ongoing illness, surgeries and treatments, which will continue at least through August.

Still my son and I have managed a couple of range trips and have certainly sent at least 1000 rounds downrange. I would estimate about 500 rounds of .22rimfire and a like amount through the various .357Mag revolvers.

By this time in a normal year, I would easily have already shot 1000 rounds through my .45ACPs, .45Auto Rim, .41Magnum, .44Magnum, .44Specials and .45Colt handguns. We haven't been able to shoot any rifle or shotgun yet this year.

As I recover and my health improves, I anticipate much more range time as the year unfolds.

this is awesome. i love to see both of these threads resurrected.

i've been shooting a ton and i owe it all to casting.

i've been going less frequently, but bringing more ammo. I try to bring new people to the range to introduce them to the hobby/sport

i have no problem bringing 400 or 500 rounds of 45 acp and letting them blast through 75% of that, and using the rest myself. i could never do that without the ability to cast and reload.

woohoo!

i've probably let people shoot my ammo for as many rounds as i've shot this year. i've also got 3 buddies in to reloading and one of which is casting. its been a good year in guns and ammo for me

It's hard to tell how much I shoot per year. I go out with my kids and they shoot a lot of my boolits. I know I have to replace about 5 to 7 bricks of primers per year. I reload close to 7K per year but probably only shoot half. I need to shoot more I know I cast twice as many boolits as I shoot. It is nice to have a small stash of everything.

I shoot 7 or 8 thousand .45's per year, about 4 thousand .40's and 5 or 6 thousand various other calibers including 10mm, 9mm, 38 special, 357, 41 mag 221 FB, 222, 222 mag, 30-30, 30-06, 303 Brit. and 6mm/284. Now that my kids are old enough to help burn ammo the old 30 carbine and my mini 14 are getting a work out again as well. When I reload, I try to fill an ammo can during a session with my favorite load and maybe 1 or 2 loads to test. This lets me stay ahead of the consumption curve. My volume of shooting has decreased from the above rate, simply because I have to watch the kids very closely. They are both girls and one is 8 and the other 12. The 12 yo has taken to paper punching with the 30 carbine and is actually getting pretty good with open sights at 100 yards. She will get better than I am, I am afraid. I have glaucoma and have never in my life been correctable to better than 20/30 so she will get better! I allow her about 100 rounds on a weekend in the carbine. I want to minimize eye strain for her. She warms up at 25 yards moves to 75 yards and drops 20 at 100 yards.

I am lucky enough to have land in 2 places with a personal range on each, so I can drive 14 miles and shoot whenever I want to. Drives my component cost way up!

I shoot only 500-600 per year in .357/.44mag-special/45 ACP, but not at paper targets. I dislike ranges intensely so I go to a couple of isolated places in the desert and hunt Jack Rabbits with the handguns. It keeps the skills sharp in a practical sense. Honestly, I only have a 50% or so hit rate with the moving target as the desert Jack usually is. I cast and load all my own ammo.

I've been shooting 3-500 rounds a week for the last 3-4 years, 45acp, 9mm and 38 spl. with 95 % of it my cast boolits. I shoot IDPA,USPSA, Steel Challenge along with working up loads and practicing. One would think that I'd be getting much better, but that's probably not the case , I was going back and forth between my 1911's and my revolvers but have been using the wheelguns only for the last two years, but it's ALL fun running and gunning, and banging and clanging.

It was about 3-400 rds per week when my aim was to shoot as fast as humanly possible at multiple targets and get 'good' hits suitable for IDPA. Drawing from the holster, fast recovery, weak hand only, Bill Drills...all that. I could hardly keep up at the loading bench, and definitely couldn't keep up at the casting pot. For the past year it's been far closer to 200 rds a week and maybe even a bit less, spending more time at 15-25 yards going quite a bit slower. Then, with my first revolver a few weeks ago now, a 44 Mag I never plan to use for defense or competition, I'm going to see 150 rds a week tops. I like it all, but I really like getting all my brass back in my bag and I really like shooting the heavy wheelgun. Regardless of how much or how fast, I always tried to go to the range with a couple of pretty clear objectives, even if was nothing more than to emulate my habits learned in dry fire. With the revolver, I'm really only going for smaller groups shooting offhand, and enjoying the manly recoil. :)

I'm blessed with 2 beautiful indoor ranges within about 25 min of my house, both belonging to my club and exclusive to club members. Within 30-45 minutes I have access to two ranges open to the public with 250 yd rifle, and within 90 minutes another club range with ranges dedicated to just about every weapon type imaginable (small bore rifle, big bore rifle, handgun silhouette, etc). It's hard to find any good excuse other than lack of time or interest.

yeah i find myself going in and out of phases with my shooting. i still love to bring my 686 and blast through a couple hundred rounds with that whether i'm hitting the target or not it's all fun.
i do mix and match rifles and mainly revolvers (don't like chasing brass) and depending on the night it's all just throwing massing round count down range at some steel or maybe a gentlemanly competition between some buddies with stupid shots with the revolver be it at a 1" rock at 30 yards or the 18" steel at 200. we always have fun.

In the past I shot a couple of times a month. My membership range is 45 minutes away sometimes thru heavy traffic. This summer it’s been reduced to about 3 times this summer. Mainly because I’m worried about running out of components for reloading. And I’m not alone except at the range. Very few shooters. Seriously considering not renewing my membership except for the fact there is an initiation fee to renew I’m critically short of 6.5 bullets & when I do see them they are expensive & really unsuitable. I do cast for handguns but primers are getting low…

Last year I clocked 25K of 9mm alone. Around another 7-8K of 45 ACP. Add in another 4-5K of assorted stuff. I don't keep track of the rimfire stuff but I know my inventory went down around 9K last year.

I've really cut back this year due to the primer situation. I had planned to have LOTS of primers on hand before the election. The China Flu hit and emptied the shelves about 5 months earlier than I had planned.

That left me sitting on only 50K each of large and small pistol primers.

This year I've only shot about 10K total of centerfire. Maybe another 7k of rimfire.
