Sense I started casting this summer, I became addicted to boolit casting and shooting/hunting with my hand made beauty's. Last deer season I hunted with my marlin 35 rem and rcbs 35-200, casted from water dropped COWW right at 2000fps. The bullet did the job, I harvested a big doe. The shot was text book perfect, broad side, just behind the front leg in a boiler room. She ran about 30 yards from where I shot her, leaving good blood trail. Looking over the body, she had 35 caliber hole in and 50 cal on the other side.
I was wondering if I can maybe run a softer boolit at same velocity so that it will expand more. My usual shots are no more then 100 yards, but can be up to 150 yards. What would I need to add to stick on WW so that boolit will expand little better, but I still would be able to drive it at 2000fps?
I'm a big tinker by nature, so I always want to improve on the stuff that might not need to be messed with. Is this the case?
What kind of alloy you guys use in your 30 cal and 35 cal deer loads?

i just add some soft lead to my ww's a titch more tin and waterdrop.
3 parts clip on's 1 part stick on's [or pure and .75% more tin] gets me just over 1% tin and about 3% antimony.
other use 50-50 and a titch of tin.
i use the same alloy air cooled in my revolver [s] cartridges and lever guns.
it works either way.
air cooled at 1500,waterdropped at 1900+.
i push my 358 win to over 2200 and it works right well.

I use WWs + 2% tin and then add 50% lead to that. I push the same 35-200-FN to 2150 fps out of my M91 Shilen barreled .35 Rem. Accuracy is excellent but I do clean the barrel to maintain best accuracy every 10 shots with this alloy. Same load with just the WWs + 2% tin shoots fine without cleaning. I use that basic "50/50" alloy in all my big game hunting loads with CF rifles pushing cast from 2000 - 2200 fps.

Kills deer very well. Photo shows little Texas buck shot with this bullet and entrance/exit wounds inside chest cavity. Buck had his nose up a does a** and at the shot he staggered about 20 yards slightly down hill to his right and collapsed. The shot placement was a little higher and farther back than i was aiming as the buck moved forward just as I shot. Range was right at 90 - 92 yards.

Sweet thanks guys. Larry do you water cool your 50/50 bullets?

Another vote for 50/50 WW and pure. I also shot my first cast bullet deer this winter with my 35 rem vel was about 1900 at the muzzle I air cooled them they were soft but held accuracy for atleast 10 shots

Air cooled wwts, if it shoots accurately, and it probably will.

Also, TRY the soft point deal, you will only need 4 or 5 of them. Pour about 80-100 gr of soft
alloy into the mold and follow with your normal alloy. Some use a cut down 9mm or .380 case
on a wire handle to dipper this qty with a separate alloy melted on the side. You don't need to test
these really more than one or two, they will shoot just like a one-alloy boolit except on
impact. Do some searching, there are many threads on variations on this method like dropping
in a buckshot to melt in the nose, etc.

OTOH, what's wrong with two holes, one of them 50 cal? ;-)

No, they are air cooled.

50/50 is a good alloy for a hunting boolit
I use that or similar in 358 and 45-70
as well as 30-30

Got it, 50/50 it is. MtGun44, that's a very interesting way of making soft nose bullets, thanks. I;ll have to look in to that.
How about the other way around? What if one wanted boolit to penetrate with out deformation? Say you are going out for black bear and you want the boolit just keep going, what alloy would you use then?

Water dropped wheel weights.

Air cooled WWts should actually do the job fine on your bear scenario. If you really think
you have to have a harded boolit, try oven heat treated. Water dropped is fine, but not
as controlled and consistent as oven heat treating.
