I have shot I-4350 in .243, .30-30, .30-06 and .270. I was wondering if there was a surplus rifle powder with that much versitility in the same calibers plus now 35 Rem.
Thanks,
Bigscot

I have used AA2520 in the past in surplus form and it has great versatility.

4895 if you are talking cast bullets. It's a little fast burning for jacketed in the 270 for best jacketed performance though.

I'd use 7383 for that range. Won't be the "best" powder ballistically for any of them, but it'll shoot.

With 7383 you may not get the fastest of any powder but you should get a speed that will work for paper and hunting. Just knowing that 150 gr at 2500-2600 will work for deer rather than the short mags and 3300 fps and you will be fine. You may learn that 180 gr cast and 1800 fps work also. :} Gianni.

................The 3 of my most favorite milsurp ppowders had to do with their ability to be used widely. These were/are WC852 (slow) which is the closest I found to 4350. Then 4895 and 4475. The 4475 is almost a direct cross to IMR3031. The surp 4895 I found to be a bit slower then some H4895 I had.
All are excellent powders with WC852 gone from the scene.

I see neither Bartlett nor Pats lists any 4895 or 4475 so it may be a moot point. Too bad.

Take a look at WC-846. I've been able to come up with very useable loads with this powder for calibers ranging from .223 up to 45/70. It's not always THE BEST, in each caliber....but there's been good loads identified in various bullets weights, jacketed and cast.
Cheers,
Don

How does the 4895 at Wideners compare to I-4895?

I've had 2 lots of 4895. Both were similar in performance and both were a bit slower then canister grade. Saying that, chances are the stuff at Widener's would be also. Even if it was the same as, or a bit faster then cannister 4895 it'd still be a superb burning range for many cartridges.

Bigscot,
You should call to make sure th powder is available unless you have some on hand. The numer instock shows zero zip nadda. And has for several months. I called in december and was told they were out and were not sure they would be getting more in.
anyway before you get your hopes up.

when I was up at wideners, I asked about more 4895 and they said that was from Talon Industries, which was out of business. The counter guys, who all reload, said that they were working on locating another source.

I had 3 kegs of wc844 but am down to about a half of one and it looks like it may have dried up. I use it in 223s 3030 7 waters .35 rem 444 and 4570 all with good results

I like the counter guys at Wideners.
I think the suprlus powder market is drying up, just as we've been told to expect for several years now.
Hi-Tech has only 3 powders listed: Bullseye 84, which is fine pistol powder, but at $65 for 6 lbs. is certainly no better deal than new production Alliant Promo, WC860 and IMR 5010. WC860's price has gone way up in the last few years. 5010 I'd leave to the .50 BMG shooters.
