View Full Version : Lyman 319247 Experiences? Velocity?

I bought the Lyman #319247 mold. It's a plain-base 165 grain mold for the 32-40 (I guess) that I bought to try and use in my Mosins and my 7.7 Arisaka. I have not cast with it yet and am debating whether or not to keep it.

Essentially, I need a .315 or .317 boolit. My Mosins lug out at .313-.314 grooves. The Lyman .314299 did NOT work. My idea was to use a larger mold and size down to .315+

When I bought the mold, I didn't realize it was a plain-base design (dumb, I know). So does anyone have experience with this boolit? How fast can you push this thing since it's not gas-checked?

I've read a couple pages of threads on this mold, but it seems it's slower/plinking loads. Any chance this boolit can be pushed to 1800 fps+ without leading?

Thanks,

Emrah

You should try sizing that boolit to fit the throat in your Mosin. The throat in my Mosin measures .317.
I am still working on my loads with the 316299 NOE Boolit.
The groove diameter in my Mosin measures .313. The boolit sizes down to the groove
diameter when fired, and it enters the tapered leade, (in my rifle)
I believe you should be able to get 1400 to 1500 fps with the pb boolit and a good fit.
I would give it a try before I got rid of the mould.

My 314299 cast at 0.312" so at least 2 thou undersize and of course a mould should cast to at least the stated diameter. Another 314299 I borowed cast at 0.311".

My NOE 316299 casts at 0.316" and works well in my .303's with 0.315" throats and 0.314" grooves.

If your Lyman casts at 0.313"/0.314" you could Beagle it to get up to 0.003" more diameter. That is as easy way to try it at larger diameter.

If it works for you PatMarlin makes PB gas check makers so it can be gas checked.

Alternately, NOE makes several moulds in 0.314" to 0.316" diameter depending on what is in stock from group buys.

Another source of custom diameter moulds at reasonable prices is Accurate Moulds. Tom will cut to whatever diameter you want.

I'm pretty sure I can get this boolit to the correct size I want. I guess my main question is how fast can you push this (or any other plain-base .30 cal) boolit? I'm thinking the limit will be somewhere around 1400-1500 fps. Looking for first-hand experiences to validate this.

I would try 5.5 - 7 gr Bullseye for a nice load in the 1050 - 1150 fps range. Similar PB'ed cast bullets of .30 -8mm do very well in their respective cartridges with such.

it's kinda weird that i can push plain based revolver cartridges in my leverguns faster than i can from rifle cartridges.
it might have something to do with the bbl's twist rates.
but @ 1400 seems to be about the accuracy cut-off point for non gc boolits in a rifle bbl.
fillers and such can increase the velocity some.
but even 1,000 fps can be pretty dang accurate at 100 yds, and cheap as all get out to shoot.
something like 20 for a dollar.
