30-06 Tong Tool ( Steel ) , seems that all dies are there. Light rust that I think I can clean up without a problem. Handles read " Ideal " 30-06 .

Can anyone tell me about the history of this tool. When did it first appear ?

Early steel, caliber specific, Lyman 310. These started out as caliber specific one piece tong tools in
the buffalo wipeout era. About in the 1900 time frame, not sure exactly, IDEAL came up with
the idea of interchangable dies in the handle, rather than different holes and protrusions
as part of the handles. Later there were steel handles that came in two sizes with screw
in bushings to adapt to a cartridge, along with the die set. Later ones had aluminum handles
with steel bushings and dies. The earliest buffalo era handles had a mold on the opposite side
of the hinge. You could do it ALL with one tool. These were supplied by the gun makers.

I started reloading with a 7x57 Lyman 310 tool loading for my mint 1895 Mauser which cost
$35 - mailed to a 16 yr old in the "Good Old Days" when we still had a free country.

Bill,

The mail man drove up to my house in his jeep in 1966, handed me my Herter's J-9 , 264 Win. Mag. I'd ordered for $89.95.

Yes, that was when we still had a free country.

I started loading with a 310 tool (used), in 222 for a new 340 Sav. that cost less than 50.00 at the time. Also had a used Webster (oil damper) scale, and I made my dippers for powder. It took care of a lot of woodchucks, and a few stray cats in western N.Y. Also took a nice 3x3 buck with it in a different state where it was legal. Have a couple of 310 tools for 06, 257R, 30-30, 357 etc. It is good to go back to basics once in awhile and load a box or two with basic tools. It is sort of a reality check, and lord only knows we need more reality checks today.

Ben, did the sizing chamber die come with the set? It is for sizing cast boolits base first and requires a specific nose punch. I first thought they were sort of rare, but when I bought another 310 set in .45-70, it had the sizing chamber die also. Since paying closer attention have seen several others, so more common that I thought.

In pic of my .44-40 310 set here, it is the one to extreme left with nose punch inserted.

I beleive the sizing chambers were seperate but they did come with the Lyman "Ammunition Maker" set as I got one when I bought mine in the late 50s.....along with a really dinky set of mould handles and a SC 311291 mould.

Actually the sizing chambers work really well and can be used as a "nose first sizer" with a 7/8 X 14 adapter in a press./beagle

Your question of :

Ben, did the sizing chamber die come with the set?

The seller didn't specify, he just stated that it was " complete " with 5 dies. I should have the set in a few days and I can report back with more specifics when it arrives.
