I'm working with another super Red hawk 44 mag..I find it shoots gas check boolits (.432) almost full tilt but and having leading issues with plain base boolits .432.
I can see what the problem is after measuring the throats they are .429 How far do I need to open the throats up? I'm asking because I can take metal off, but can't put it back.
I don't recall how far I opened up mine without measuring them..Seems to me I opened them up to .430-.431
Will .430 be enough?

What does the barrel measure? I like throats .001 over bore diameter.

I use .432 bullets in mine as I got one with.432 throats from the start.

the bbl is most likely at 429 also.
if you buy a lyman mold it'll most likely pour a 429 boolit too.
i would forget about the 432 thing and go to 430 or 429.
i use 430 in everything i have thats marked 44 sept for the 44-40.

the squishing down the boolit sounds like you are harming the base [and possibly blowing the lube off the boolit in the gap] and the check is protecting it.
where is the leading at?
past the thread constriction?

if he insists on opening the throats, i'd go to 430 or whatever the bbl calls for.

Leading starts right at the rifling

I haven't tried a thinner bullet yet, but that doesn't make sense?

Your .429 throats are giving you a smaller bullet. I would try a .429 or .430 bullet and see what happens.
How hard are the bullets and what kind of load? Sounds like a case of gas blowing by before the bullet can seal the bore. A bigger kick in the pants or a slightly softer alloy might help.

I'll have to slug the barrel... I do have a .429 sizer I could try

Slug the barrel! SRHs are also prone to having another .001" thread-choke. You will know after pushing a slug from muzzle to forcing cone if the slug gets harder to push when it goes through the part in the frame. Make chamber throats .001" over groove diameter and shoot boolits at this diameter or slightly over. You can polish out throats an easy .001" with emory cloth on a dowel to even them up. I have used the 320 grit strips sold in the hardware store plumbing department.

I've have done that a few times without slugging the barrel. I just never thought there was that much difference in groove diameters in SRHs. I have found a bunch of differences in throats though. I've been wrong before.

I shoot .431s as my Colt has a .430 groove and I have reamed the throats t0 431+. The boolits just push through. The other guns don't mind .002 over groove. The Smith would shoot 1 hole if I could.

Dave Manson's 44 Reamers are .431 with a tolerance of -0 +.0005. Good people to talk to.

SAAMI Spec for 44 throats is .4325 but I've never seen one. My Redhawk is .432
