At one time I thought I read an article in a gun magazine in which the author had replaced the rebounding hammer and trigger in an 1886 Winchester/USRAC with Browning parts to improve the trigger pull and reliability. In addition, instead of welding up the hole in the tang where the safety is located he simply replaced it with a well fitted "plug" (and did not have to reblue the tang/receiver). I was under the impression the plug had been a commercial product, but I can't seem to locate it.

Does anyone recall who might produce such a plug?

Are you talking about the cross-bolt type safety? If so, I used a couple of black plastic plugs from Ace Hardware that are used to cover countersunk screw holes I believe. They snap in real nice.

I'm afraid in my case a tang sight would fill that bill and cover the hole. Much classier and more useful than a plug. A company that makes a product to bypass a safety device is taking a huge risk these days.
