I have been trying to get good 250sav brass with no luck. Every piece out of the 500 Winchester brass has off center flash holes terrible burrs and just bad finish. Surprising for Win brass. Then I look at 22-250 brass and its perfect. The only reason I can think of as to not sizing up the 22-250 brass is neck tension. Any other reason? Anyone have experience doing this?

Well the 22-250 is just 250 necked down to 22 caliber so necking back up should work.

Neck tension shoiuld be fine if you use .22-250 brass to make .250 Savage brass. I just find it humorous to have to make the original parent brass out of the wildcat offspring.

My one concern doing this is the cartridge headstamp, I have seen people just read the headstamp instead of the label on the box prior to chambering a round. That is why my 6.5-06 brass is made from necked down .30-06, instead of necked up .25-06.

Can you get the money back on the brass? The Remington 22-250 brass is n much less costly.
And yes the reverse necking is amusing. It you think it was better you can get 300 Savage and neck it down, thats what they did to get the 250 savage!

Or start with .308 and make'em from scratch.

You will need a neck reamer and probably a turner if you go this route.

Returning the brass is not an option. Just moved 2000+ miles away from where I got them. Forming from 308 requires case form dies that I don't have. However I may be able to save the majority by boring the flash holes a little bigger. Hmmmm time for a little math and measuring.

It is NOT a good idea to enlarge flash holes for any loads other than plinckers with very small charges or primer only plastic/wax projectiles. Be safe.

Contact Winchester with a lot number and pics. They may make it right.

That's what all the experts say. I have made .243 and .22-250 with nothing but RCBS fl sizing dies. I did take two passes at the .22-250.

If you want top quality .250 Savage brass, start with Lapua .22-250. They've been making that for a couple of years now.

I recently picked up a box of reloaded 250 Savage to salvage the brass, I figured I would pull the bullets and powder and tumble the brass for trading stock. I put it in the impact puller and on or about the second hit the bullet, neck and shoulder would seperate from the brass.
I don't know what was used on or in this brass but the same thing happened to .303 Savage and 8mm brass the the same guy reloaded. I never seen anything like it, I actually just snapped some of them open with my fingers.

If you use the 22/250 brass you will get slightly thinner necks and a shorter OAL. If you use 300 Savage brass you will get a longer thicker neck.

Some chemical used in cleaning the brass.
Perhaps ammonia.

Some reloaders get a littel to smart for there own good.

Can't help but wonder how David Tubbs 6mm XTC brass from Lapua would react to a 250 Savage size die.

Since it is a blown out 22-250 case.

We used to make 22-250 from 308 GI seems like the step die was a die cut w/correct body taper and shoulder and a fat neck . I think it may have been cut w/"used up" die reemers for the 300 Sav but the necks we're closer so maybe out of spec 250 reemers. I believe 308,although 243 might work out better would be a straight size w/o the decapping pin.I've some spares for the cause if you'd like.

On a related note I recently formed some 7x57 from odd lots of 06' . Did you know that 7x57 and 8x57 aren't really that much alike? Totally different shoulders and neck lengths.

I never seen anything like it, I actually just snapped some of them open with my fingers.

Old mercuric primers would do that to brass as well as Ammonia cleaners GabbyM mentioned.
