got me to wondering about the best way to store ammunition long term, given I don't have spam can equipment available.
Might it be a good idea to bury some in fruit jars, just in case?

Military ammo cans with good seals , and you can also use a foodsaver and vacuum seal it in packages . Thats what I use.
Glass is too breakable...large plastic mayonaise jugs would be better if not exposed to the sun..

Yeah, but you could label the glass ones, "In case of a Revolution, break glass". Kind of hard to do that with plastic. [smilie=s:

Strangely enough, military ammo cans have proven to be excellent for ----

long term storage of ammo.

How amazing. :bigsmyl2:

I can just see somebody standing there shaking a bottle while the bad guy's charging. Guess the emergency procedure is to hit him with the bottle.

Seeing the rounds in a bottle reminds me of my wife. I had an old antique earthernware jug and my wife saved her change in it. A quarter would just barely fit through the neck. Fine until you wanted to remove it. Boys, it was comical.

.50 ammo cans are the way to go./beagle

Food Saver vac bags will pull the air out of the cases, too, if you don't use armorer's sealant on the primer and boolit/bullet, and I have a feeling that would extend the life of the powder and primer maybe another 20 years beyond normal storage life.

My theory (haven't gotten around to testing it yet) is that a small, FRESH dessicant pack thrown in the vac bag, vacuum sealed, and rolled up and stored in ammo cans in a basement, cellar, or similar constant-temperature place would preserve ammo for centuries.

I have had good luck with waterproofing primers with nail polish around them instead of Armorers sealer.
