What is your favorite 45 Colt bullet and load for older guns such as post-black powder SAA's and S&W Triple Locks?

Hi and welcome to the forum. A very long time ago I owned (for a while) a Colt SA and shot Lyman #454190 which was touted as the correct and classic bullet to use. I no longer have the gun or the mold, but as I understand it the bullet has been one of the popular choices over the years. I used BP and it was fun to shoot. I tried to learn quick draw with it until I started to plow up the ground not too far in front of my feet; end of game! Anyway check and see if Lyman still markets that mold number and ask around to see if anyone still uses it. LLS

Lee .45/255RF cast from 1/2 WW 1/2 Pure lead, LLA lube and 8.5 grains of Unique. Accurate, mild, fun to shoot and big holes!

i use various charges of different powders.
but keep them under 14k pressure.

RCBS 270 SAA over 11gr AA#5 for around 900 fps from pistol. AA#5 burns cleaner and shoots straighter than Unique for me.

454190 and WW231 works for me. These are shooting loads. I have a couple of SBH .44 Mags if I want to hot rod./beagle

454-190 is a fine boolit, but slow to cast due to being only a double cavity steel mould. The Lee 452-255-RF drops closer to 454 than it does 452, is available in the 6 cavity molds for high production, and shoots great with smokeless propellant, although a poor choice if shooting real gun powder. Of course my favorite is the PRS 454-250-RF, but there may be some bias there.

Ditto on the 454190 or the Accurate Mold clone.

I shoot a BRP 453640 design, very similar to this:

behind either some Unique or Herco if I want 900-950 fps or so. I also use quicker burning powders like Red dot or Promo for that 800 fps area.

454190 cast from near pure scrap lead, lubed with Emmert's, crimped over the break in the ogive, all case space filled with Swiss FFg, Federal LP primer.

Lee .452 255 grain RNFP is what I use in my Colt .45 clone. I load it over 5 gn. of Bulls Eye and it works for me. Just my dos centavos worth. BC
