View Full Version : Unique and 264 grain Plain-Base Boolit...How much faster can I take it?

Please see the numbers below. These boolits were fired from my Ruger SRH .454 Casull with the 2.58" barrel. There was no leading indicated. The boolits were the LEE 452-255-RF cast from staight wheel weights and dropped at about 264 grains. At the velocities here, the accuracy was pretty good.

QUESTION:
Can I drive these boolits faster with Unique? What is the pressure like at 11 grains of Unique? What are we looking at 12 grains? Etc., etc.

You should be able to see the sunny side of 1200 with them.

Not with Unique, you need a slower burning powder.

I agree. You kinda have to tread lightly with high end Unique loads. The pressure curve sneaks up on you. When in doubt, and you're interpolating loads, don't exceed the max grains for the next heavier bullet you have data for any you won't get in trouble./beagle

I should have clarified my statement. It was regarding the boolit alone I did not mean to insinuate that it could be done with Unique. Sorry.

the bbl length is gonna have a say so in the velocity.
if you are trying to match book velocities, you will be over pressure with them in your gun.
blue-dot is almost the same burn rate as 800-x

I think that I will leave the Unique at 11 grains. For one, according to Alliant, that is the max load for a 270 grain SWC, 7.5" barrel, at 1,155 FPS. Secondly, a hair over 1,000 FPS from a snub-nose is, for me, rather pleasing with a this boolit. I think it will do all that I need it to do.

However, this weekend, at the information that 454PB has passed on, I decided to pick up some Blue Dot. So, I will cast some more boolits and start out with 15 grains of Blue Dot and see what happens.

Would a Max Load for Blue Dot with this boolit, in this case, be around 17 or 18 grains? Higher?

Thanks

I don't know anything about 800-X. How does it perform in a bbl of this length, bullet weight and design, and caliber.

I've gone that heavy in my guns, but you will have to work up your own "maximum".
