I have the chance to buy a project Remington 722 in 300 Savage for a very fair price. The only thing I know about the 300 is that my buddies 99 lever action isnt accurate.

With the short neck of this case is there a cast bullet that will work well in it?

Don't sweat it, it'll be as accurate as the barrel allows, and that being a Remington barrel, it should be as accurate as you can shoot. I'd try to stay under 180 grains in weight, the RCBS .308-165-SIL would be a good choice. Of course it would be real easy to ream it out to .308 if you'd rather. There's a couple of wildcats that set the shoulder back on the .308 to get a long neck...

Having shot a number of 99's in 300 if his gun isn't accurate there is some problem as every one I have had would shoot as good as I could hold. I used a 300 Savage in a Jap action for a while and it was a very good cast bullet shooter. Mine had a Douglas barrel on it. The 722 magazine won't let you seat a cast bullet out real far but it won't hurt the 300 if the bullet is down in the powder a little as long as you use a good hard lube. By project if yo mean needs a new stock you might have a hard time finding one. If it is less than that the 722's are a very nice rifle and well woth rescueing.

300Sav is a wonderful deer cartridge, between the .30-30 and the .308. The short neck is no big deal, especially if you are loading boolits in the 150-165gr range. Depending on the twist, it might work VERY well with soupcans, too, so would work well on everythin from varmints through deer. I'd snap it up. If it doesn't live up to expectations, it can always be rebarreled to .250sav, which you may like even better.

KCSO that is exactly what it needs, they took it and chopped off 3" then put it back on, if I get the rifle I am considering cutting 1/4" of the stock to clean up there poor cut then getting a grind to fit recoil pad, refinishing the stock and using/selling it as a "youth stock" . I see there are stocks on ebay for Rem 722's, and have heard that a guy can fit a 700 stock to one.

The 311414 does a real good job in a 300 Sav as that is the rifle it was made for. Mark

I was just wondering , how close is the 300 Savage in size to the new 30 TC? I know it is (30 TC) is suppossed to be hotrodded to something like 30-06 territory but was wondering about the physical size between the two.

From what I have just read the 300 Savage is a touch shorter, .049". But why?

To make a shorter 308 with 30-06 realm of power, beaf up 308 loads, oh wait Hornady Light Magnum.

I dont see the point in reinventing the wheel.

You can fit a 700 stock to a 722. I have done it with the long action 721.

It will be easier if you use a 700 box magazine, spring, trigger guard, and the action mounting screws.

The 721 that I did, I used an ADL stock. I also fitted a 721 to a Bell & Carlson 700 Rem. stock. That was an ADL model also.

There is not a whole lot to do.

You must cut down the point right behind the bolt groove to clear the safe of the 722.

You have to open the barrel channel where the swell is in the barrel for the rear sight.

You must open the bottom of the bolt channel a little because the bolt on a 722 is straight down while a 700 bolt sweeps back slightly.

There would be a lot more work if you use floorplate of the 722.

I hope this helps

If you chose to buy an original 722 stock, they made two different stocks, a low comb and a high comb. Low comb for open sights and a high comb for scope.

Some high comb stocks are marked HC in the barrel channel just ahead of the action. Some are marked 222 and 244, also high comb.

You can re-chamber the 300 to 308 if you want. That would be the easiest caliber to change to.
