I just bought 1200 lbs of lead. I'm hoping it's pure. It came from the walls of an X-Ray room. Anybody know if this stuff is pure or not?
I've got 500 lbs of mostly Mono type, some Lino and some Foundry type to mix with the stuff.
Anyway, it is a sight unseen right now. My son in law made the score for me. His uncle was on the way to the scrap yard with it.

Strictly speaking with my half dozen or so dealings with X-ray lab shieldings, it is pure lead. The only draw back to the sight unseen buy is that this lead may be still attached to the drywall, then the fun starts.Robert

Pure lead.
Has to be. Lest any of the alloy metals in it react to the x-radiation.
Nice haul.

I picked up 600+ with drywall plaster and latex all over. Throw it in the pot and go, self fluxing.
Just make sure safety stuff worn, pops and crackles a little. Gtek

Yes,it's pure and very soft.I worked with some of it and it makes very nice musket balls.

The door frames are usually lined also. 2 frames, 140 lbs. and 40lbs. It peel off fairly easily. Glue floats to the top of the pot.

I had some of this sheeting given to me. It's pure lead alright, but mine had a little arsenic mixed in. Melting it down made me a tad sick for a couple days. After it's fluxed, no worries.

It is pure lead. My son is a x-ray tech and he get it when it is his turn. (There are three others there that get some also.) Not that much as you got, but usually about 200 lbs. about every 3 months.

Do the change the lead out? Does it lose it's ability to block X-rays?

Great score, I didn't know they changed it out every so often. I assume the radation used in x-rays is not accumlative. Think I will talk with my dentist, see if I can get a little of my kidds brace money back. LOL

Thanks for all of the replys guys. From what I understand, it's just lead with no drywall or any other trash, just lead.

No, the lead doesn't lose effectiveness, they remodel! It's not expensive compared to the overall project, and you can just nail up the new stuff. Probably 1/8" sheets.

If you are casting for 22's, you have a lifetime of lead there!

Great score! I just came from the scrapyard, and had bought 60 pounds of the stuff, still has some of the paper on it. !/2 ton is great! I can see the backyard smelters in America will be busy.
