hello;

purchased a marlin 1894s in 44 magnum to shoot cast bullets. today was the first time i fired the rifle.

anyone shoot a 44 magnum rifle using 18.5 grains alliant 2400, using a 240 grain hornday 240 grain xtp bullet????

shooting at the sheriff’s range and they will not allow a chronograph. goal was to sight rifle in for 50 yards. when all was done, able to shoot 3 shots into the 1” center square of the target at 50 yards.

same powder charge, ohause cast bullet, weight 258 grains, speed (?), bullets hit @ 3" higher than the horandy bullets at 50 yards. bullet is a plain base, swc keith style bullet. lee liquid alox for bullet lube, sized to .430”.

rifle had no leading or copper fowling in barrel after 12 jacket bullets and 18 cast bullets.
no sign of pressure with either bullets. from loading manuals, looks like 20.5 grains of 2400 might be the max for the rifle.

thanks for a any input.

i can tell you with a 240 cast rnfp 19.2 gives me 1650 in a 24"Bbl,
with starline brass.
rem gave me 1660+,win gave @1625 and magtech was in the 1600 range with cci 300 primers.
429421 was right in the same area even though it is a bit heavier.
your mileage may/will vary.
the cast is a bit faster than jaxketed when the same weights are used yours being a bit heavier than your jaxketed should put the pressures fairly close but i bet they are still a titch faster.
i also run right close to the same velocities [usually within 25 fps] with my 45 colt the same brands of brass,powder charge,and primers.
using the 452664,and 454424 in place of the 429667 and 429421.
