After lurking here for a bit and getting into reloading I've decided to jump into bullet casting. Thought I'd start small and picked up a Lee Soupcan mold (also, it was the only .30 cal mold my local store had in stock) to work on some plinking loads for my .30-30s.

Just finished loading up the first batch today over 10gr of Trail Boss. Haven't shot them yet, but I'm pretty pleased with how they look. They cycle through my Marlin fine, but won't feed into the Winchester which I expected from the short OAL and posts I had read here. That's ok, they can be single shot fine I'm sure.

Now I'm going to have to pick up some sizers and maybe a Ranch Dog mold to go for full house loads :)
Thanks for all the info here and I'm looking forward to enjoying a new hobby.

I use the Lee C309-170-F I have been very pleased with its performance in my .30-30.

Incidentally, it is a virtual clone of the very popular Lyman 311041.

I also have had good results with the Lee 309-170, well actually mine is a 311-170, but the same design. I have been experimenting with the 309-150, but haven't settled on a good load yet.

RD provides a nice mold for the money and you can get it in 3 x3. Mine is for the newer Marlins, the nose is a little smaller. As you have a Marlin and Win, use one of those soupcans to slug the throat of both to find what fits both. The RD isn't a bore-rider.

..............A good friend of mine has shot that design to over 2100 fps from his M94 Winchester and produced 5 shot 1" to 1.25" groups @ 100 yards. His rifle wore a Leupold VX-II 3-9 scope. Load was 22.0grs H4198 + dacron with Javalina (NRA formula) lube.

When I lived out in the sticks I used it to shoot ground squirrels with my -'03 Springfield. I'm at my folk's in AZ at the moment so I won't quote the load, which was a shotgun/pistol powder producing 1650 fps. With the sight set on 500 yds a 6 o'clock hold on one of the critters would supply a hit out to 50 yards. That was about the max range for me and irons.
