Good morning Jamesconn
You might want to consider selling boxes of Carlos V candy bars. Those are great munching items.
When we lived in Queretaro during 1985 that is how we bought vanilla. Down here in Arequipa it is the same. Buy liters of vanilla, sorgum, molasis.. whatever. Anybody can walk into any warehouse and order up whatever they can afford. Just have to figure out where the best buy is hiding.

If shipping doesn't get outrageous, I'll take a bottle.

med flat rate is probably going to be the only reasonable way to ship , any thing over 13 oz has to go first class , or so the tell me at the post office.

I got schooled on shipping USPS recently , as soon as you send boolits in the mail , you might as well send a hole small flat rate box 50 170 gr boolits is over a pound

since a pints a pound the world around (in water) and vanilla by the liter is just about the same weight as 2 pints of water your looking at a minimum of 2 pounds and a liter bottle won't fit in a small flat rate box , at least not the liter bottles of vanilla i have been getting from family that lives on the border

THAT vanilla is some awesome stuff. You only need half or less as much as the imitation **** you get here. And it tastes better. AND, a liter is less than 4 oz of the artificial. They normally have it in light and dark too!

p.s. Weslaco is where I would get mine when we went down for the summer for our two week AT.

May I suggest you do some research on shipping costs? IIRC, vanilla extract has a high alcohol content. Depending on that number, it may be classified as Hazardous Material and be prohibited from shipping through USPS. If you have to ship UPS, the haz mat fee would be prohibitive imo.

If the shipping is not bad I would take at least 2 litters to 4 of them depending on how much the shipping will be.

Well....as soon as we can get an idea on shipping costs, I'd be interested.
3 bucks per liter is great. But "30" bucks per liter for shipping might not be.
I guess also is that in plastic or glass?? Knowing how shippers treat their customers, glass would have to be packaged pretty darn well. Just sayin ..... Lee
Thanks!

Find out what you can get the vanilla beans for. That is where the flavor is.

Silver Eagle

Big +1 Oldschool!
If you can get the beans, it is easy to make vanilla extract. Beans would also be easier and cheaper to ship.

I would be interested in a liter or 2 once the shipping prices have been worked out.

Vanilla Extract--Standard of Identity (21CFR169.175)
A pure vanilla extract must contain the extractive matter from 13.35 ounces of vanilla beans at 25% moisture per fold, per U.S. gallon with a minimum ethanol content of 35%.

That's the USA legal definition. What you get from Mexico may be different. Either way, it is almost certain to contain more alcohol that the USPS is going to want to ship. UPS, Fedex & other shippers may have different rules.

Shipping would be a lot Cheaper if you could just get the Beans.

Could you pick up a few Kilos and send them to Maine.

Tanke the Majic Beans and drop them into a bottle of Majic Potato water.

Let soak for anywhere from a week to a year.

Poof! you have home made Vannilla Drink.

Soak for as long as you like! When I drove over the road, I used to go over the border every time I got close, usually for vanilla for friends. Some of that stuff is aged 12 years in casks, some only 1 year. Most vanilla was a byproduct of the Kalua industry, so I was told. I still prefer real vanilla to that imitation stuff.

Instead of an answer to your previous question, I followed the suggestion. You are right, vanilla beans are readily available on Amazon and eBay.

JIMinPHX

vanilla beans are readily available on Amazon and eBay.

The quality varies quite a bit.

Some of the best ones (bourbon variety) come from Madagascar. The Mexican beans are pretty close to second best. Tongan beans tend to have a bit of a fig flavor to them. Java beans can be a bit flinty. African beans vary all over the place.

Variety & location aside, the actual quality can be anywhere from wonderful to awful depending on who you get them from.

Ok guys sorry for the super long wait.
My local post office charges $11.35 for the medium flat rate box which can hold 5 bottles. I just went to mexico and the vanilla costs $1.95/L
So If you order 1 medium box full (total $21.10) it comes out to $4.22/L shipped per 5 bottles

If you order a Large flat rate box it costs $15.45 for the box and it fits 8 bottles $1.95/L the total is $31.05 for the flat rate box and it costs $3.88/L shipped per 8 bottles

Jamesconn
03-16-2012, 05:54 PM
Send me a PM with the number of bottles you want, and your payment method I will take Paypal or Postal Money orders. I will contact you with payment information. if you want to order in different increments than 5 or 8 contact me and I will find out what the cost will be for you.
I am goin to go again next weekend that is the deadline for the last orders.

Jamesconn,

Have you talked to the US Customs Officials concerning this? I STRONGLY suggest you do so.

Have Fun,

I asked USPS and its legal to ship and if your talkin about buyin all the vanilla and shippin it all over the US ya it's legal. You don't have to pay taxes on it when you cross the border. If you have a drivers lisence from a border state they don't let you take as much booze back than if you have one that's not a border state because they are afraid you will open a liquor store.

I'd be up for a med box full, possibly a large box. Will let you know by Wednesday.

Jamesconn
I think you shorted yourself on the medium box. $ 1.95 X 5= $9.75 + $11.35= $ 22.13.
You must have devided the postage then added it to the price per bottle. I don't have enough
sense to know why but if it was me I'd want the $ 22.13
Money order is on the way.
Thanks
Pete

I received my package of vanilla today. My daughter picked it up from the PO and opened the package. When I got home, she said "I think they are bad. The caps look terrible". Then I explained to her they were dipped in beeswax to better seal them.

DLCTEX
04-07-2012, 09:22 AM
I received my 5 bottles yesterday and the priority box looked like it had been run over. There was a strong smell of vanilla, so I feared the worst. All 5 bottles were intact and one had slightly less than full contents, so I am happy. Thanks! Some of them will be gifts to friends and relatives.

Jamesconn
04-09-2012, 04:33 PM
Yes I had to seal the caps with beeswax, many of them were leaking.
So the wax worked?

Stick_man
04-09-2012, 05:08 PM
It probably worked 99%+ on it. There was a drop or two that escaped, just enough to spread the smell of vanilla pretty strong in the box, but not enough to even make a spot. Kinda makes one wonder about the bottling practices used since they weren't sealed very well. I wanted to remove the wax from the bottles, but my wife insisted it remain just to help protect the product some.

It kind of surprised me the vanilla smell was slightly stronger than the smell of beeswax. Maybe a new smell for some boolit lube. :)
