how much exposure is there handling cast lead bullets?

If you understand the dynamics and then exercise simple common sense, there is very little risk. Much, much less than driving your car back and forth to work, as a for instance...

Don't smoke while casting.
Don't eat while casting.
Don't drink while casting.
Keep a clean work station (lead dust can be taken in through the lungs).
Nearly everybody who has had a lead problem ingested it.

Most important, wash up VERY well after each session of handling lead.

I also use a dedicated casting outfit and change them before settling down at home after casting.

Very little as long as you keep your hands away from your face. Wash them thoroughly after handling the boolits, or wear latex gloves.

In the summer, I cast out of doors. In the winter, I cast in the garage with a fan blowing from behind me to keep the fumes going away. In all cases I wash my hands after I have cast, or am sizing and lubing, and when I am loading cast, or shooting cast at the range. Mostly common sense practice, however as Ben Franklin was supposed to have said, "Common sense is not a common virtue!"
